Neon Lights
P. Shop Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and now I'm sitting here and counting days,
Sitting here and counting days.
And i'd travel a million miles,
only just to see you smile,
only just to see you smile.
I'm looking for you,
if you see me you can
shine a light through,
You can shine a light through.
Now I'm wandering the streets
in the lonliest nights,
but all i see are shadows and
neon lights,
i see the neon lights shine through..
In "Neon Lights," P. Shop captures the essence of longing and the emotional weight of absence. The opening lines emphasize a sense of time standing still, as the singer reflects on the duration of separation from someone significant. The act of "counting days" serves as a metaphor for the singer's preoccupation with the passage of time, illustrating how every moment without this person feels extended and heavy. This emotional landscape sets the tone for the entire song, suggesting that the distance is not just physical but also deeply felt on an emotional level. The repetition of the phrase "sitting here and counting days" underlines a feeling of stagnation and helplessness, evoking a sense of yearning that resonates with anyone who has experienced a similar void.
As the narrative unfolds, the singer declares their willingness to go to great lengths to reconnect with this person, expressing a desire to "travel a million miles" merely to see them smile. This imagery highlights the extent of their devotion and the importance of that connection. The smile symbolizes happiness and joy, serving as a beacon of hope for the singer. The idea that such a simple gesture could elicit such profound longing suggests the depth of their feelings. It also reflects a universal theme in relationships: the transformative power of love and the lengths to which one may go to support the happiness of someone they cherish. The repetition of "only just to see you smile" amplifies this sentiment, emphasizing that the simplest acts of joy can create a significant impact in the lives of those we love.
The next set of lines introduces an air of searching and introspection. The singer now finds themselves "up in the air," symbolizing perhaps both the feeling of hope and uncertainty that follows a longing. This imagery portrays a longing not only for physical reunion but also for emotional connection. The phrase "if you see me you can shine a light through" suggests that the singer believes that the mere presence of this person can illuminate their life, dispelling the darkness that accompanies their absence. This yearning conveys an almost ethereal quality, as if love can serve as a guiding light through troubled or confusing times. The use of light implies warmth, clarity, and insight, all of which are integral to the singer's emotional journey.
Finally, the closing imagery of "wandering the streets in the loneliest nights" brings a poignant contrast between the vibrancy of the world and the loneliness experienced by the singer. Shadows signify the remnants of past connections or the emotional weight they carry, while the "neon lights" can be interpreted as both a depiction of the bustling life around them and the stark reality of their solitude. The contrast between shadows and lights represents their emotional state – feeling lost yet surrounded by a seemingly vibrant world. In this introspective moment, the neon lights symbolize a glimmer of hope amid darkness, suggesting that even in loneliness, there are moments of brightness to be found. Ultimately, the singer navigates through an emotional landscape filled with hope, longing, and the enduring desire for connection, resonating with anyone who has grappled with the pain of absence and the hope of reunion.
