The Wolves
PHARAOH Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Call her your queen
And lay a bed of roses at her feet
Court the obscene
And lay with the swine

Her pledges and promises
Naked lies that beg your own decline
See no wrong in this
You're drunk on her venomous wine
Poison fills your cup
And when your mouth starts to foam
You trust that you're rightly riled
Frothing bile

Yank the leash, command it to comply
The Wolves are coming
Raise the whip and dare it to defy
The Wolves are coming
You thought you raised a dog, and wonder why
The wolf has bloodlust in his eyes
You're the trembling prey
Wolves will not obey

Slave in the mines
And praise your master's magnanimity
Die for his diamonds
And groan for his gold

Unguarded and tame
Broken by the hypnotizing hold
Think you're high from the flames
But you're feverish out in the cold
Your life is cheaply sold
And then when the coal runs out
And the mountains are stripped and bare
Where's your share?

Yank the leash, command it to comply
The Wolves are coming
Raise the whip and dare it to defy
The Wolves are coming
You thought you raised a dog, and wonder why
The wolf has bloodlust in his eyes
You're the trembling prey
Wolves will not obey

Hacking and lame
Deny yourself the wanted medicine
The mark in a game
That you think you control
Wager with your soul
And so you howl with the wolves
But the scent on the wind is yours
The bloody track is yours

Yank the leash, command it to comply
The Wolves are coming
Raise the whip and dare it to defy
The Wolves are coming
You thought you raised a dog, and wonder why
The wolf has bloodlust in his eyes

You're the trembling prey
Wolves will not obey

Overall Meaning

Pharaoh's song "The Wolves" seems to be about the dangers of blindly following and submitting to a dominant manipulator. The lyrics warn against putting one's trust in someone who is only looking out for their own interests, as this can lead to one being controlled and ultimately destroyed. The first verse suggests the false promises of the manipulator, who is compared to a queen who is courted and given gifts, but who will ultimately lead one to ruin. The second verse speaks of the enslavement caused by the manipulator, who promises riches but ultimately devalues one's life. The third verse seems to suggest that one can become like a wolf, loyal to the manipulator and willing to do anything for them, but that this can only lead to one's own destruction.

The chorus warns against blindly following the manipulator, calling on the listener to take control and yank the leash of the wolf they've been turned into. However, the final lines of the chorus suggest that the wolves will not obey and that one will ultimately become their prey. This serves as a powerful allegory for the dangers of giving too much power to someone who does not have one's best interests at heart.
