The strength
That's in
Your arms
Oh, to be
Your stunning
Bride
Your hair
Glistening
Like sun
Oh, would
That it
Were mine
Samson
Your hair
That's in
My hands
I'll keep
It safe
You're mine
You're mine
He said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah, my babe"
"Delilah, my babe"
Said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"Delilah my babe"
Said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"You lied in my face"
"You cut off my hair"
"You lied in my bed"
Samson
You'll stay
With your 'lilah
I hold you in
My hands
Yeah
Your hairy strength
My man
My man
He said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"Delilah my babe"
Said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"Delilah my babe"
He said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"Delilah my babe"
Said "wait"
Said "wait"
"Delilah my babe"
"You lied in my face"
"You cut off my hair"
"You lied in my bed"
The lyrics of PJ Harvey's song "Hair" evoke the story of Samson and Delilah in the Bible, where the warrior Samson possessed tremendous physical strength due to his long hair, which he kept as a sign of his devotion to God. In the song, the singer, representing Delilah, expresses her desire to possess Samson's strength and beauty, which she sees as belonging to her. She describes his hair as "glistening like sun" and pledges to keep it safe. However, in the end, Samson discovers that Delilah had betrayed him, cutting off his hair and stealing his strength, leaving him vulnerable and alone.
The lyrics of "Hair" can be interpreted as a commentary on the themes of power, beauty, and betrayal. It suggests that the desire for power and control can lead to manipulation and treachery. It also explores the idea of beauty as a source of power and how it can be used to exploit and control others. The song ultimately portrays the consequences of betrayal and the devastation it can cause in relationships.
