Penelope Jane was born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on 16 July 1960. PJ's first musical group was an all-female band called Pantha. About a year later she joined Jimslip which in time became "Hotline". She was the lead singer for the rock band Hotline, which was formed in Johannesburg in 1980. The band changed their style to Afro-rock in 1983. Hotline disbanded in 1987, after which P.J. Powers pursued a solo career.
Some of her biggest hits like "Feel So Strong" (a 1983 duet with Steve Kekana) she wrote herself, as well as "You're So Good to Me" (1982), "There is an Answer" (1986) and "Home to Africa" (1985). One of her biggest hits (with Hotline) was "Jabulani", which was written by Hotline's bass guitarist, George Van Dyk, who later went on to have his own band called Wozani.

Whatever you’re doing
Whatever you say to me, I was the one
Waiting here, and in the end
I’m on my own
'Cause I heard it before
That you would be leaving
Told me things were gonna be fine
Well, hey I’m done
I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna take my hand
And lead me down the road
To where I want to be
Yes, I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna look up now
And shine and know
That I create my own destiny
Well, just about now
Your ears should be burning
And I feel a glow inside my soul to know
That I’ll no longer be the one who’s hurting
Sometimes I wonder
If you ever think of me
Well, here’s a thing, you see
Either way
It just no longer matters
Coz I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna take my hand
And lead me down the road
To where I want to be
Yes, I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna look up now
And shine and know
That I create my own destiny
I don’t care anymore
I’ve got nothing left to lose
And I am finally in
A place that I can chose
And I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna take my hand
And lead me down the road
To where I want to be
Yes, I’m gonna be
My destiny
I’m gonna look up now
And shine and know
That I create my own destiny
My own destiny
My own destiny
PJ Powers's "Destiny" is a song of empowerment and self-determination. The lyrics suggest that no matter how much someone may let you down or hurt you, you have the power to forge your own path and create your own destiny. The singer of the song seems to have been betrayed by someone she trusted, and the betrayal has left her feeling like she is on her own. She is tired of being lied to and disappointed, and she decides to take control of her own life.
The lyrics are quite straightforward and easy to understand. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that the person she trusted has left her alone. She then reflects on how she has been lied to and misled. However, the chorus serves as a rallying cry for her to take control of her own life and make her own decisions. She is no longer going to let anyone else determine her path or hold her back. The final verse is particularly powerful, as the singer declares that she no longer cares about what the person who hurt her thinks. She is focused on her own future and is determined to make it a success.
Overall, "Destiny" is an empowering song that encourages listeners to take control of their own lives and make their own destiny. It is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, we still have the power to shape our own future.
