PRINCESS PRINCESS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song 友達のまま by PRINCESS PRINCESS talks about unrequited love and the struggle of still holding feelings for someone who may not reciprocate those emotions. The singer describes observing the person they love from afar, watching their back as they walk, their smile as they protect and joke around with them. However, the singer knows that these moments are fleeting and that come tomorrow, they will fade away, causing them to question how long they will remember these brief interactions. The lyrics also touch on the pain of watching the person you love move on and find someone else while you are still stuck pining for them, unable to forget the brief kiss you once shared.

Despite the pain, the singer continues to hold onto hope and the idea that their love for this person is important, even though it may never be reciprocated. They find comfort in seeking out the person they love, despite knowing the pain it may bring, and hide their tears as they listen to music. Ultimately, the song’s central theme speaks to the universal pain of loving someone who may never love us back.

"In a relationship as friends (TOMODACHI no MAMA)" Princess Princess
Released on November 17, 1989
Lyrics by Kyoko Tomita, Composed by Kaori Okui, Arranged by Princess Princess
(English translation of the rough meaning of the Japanese lyrics)

Your back I'm used to seeing, because I always walk a little behind you
Your hands casually and quickly trying to cover me
And your smiling profile
I'm going to forget it tomorrow
So just a little bit, just a little bit, just for now, I want to look at you

Words I never meant to say to you, but I can't forget them ever
The dream you've wanted is not with me, but with that girl.

The one time you kissed me in a joking way
I'm sure you've forgotten it by now
I've found a new lover, and yet, I find myself longing for you.
If I tell anyone about this, I'm sure they will laugh at me.
But this feeling is my precious love for you.

I can see the harbor in the distance outside the window,
Without a promise of a next date with you
As I exit the freeway
I'll have to say bye and good-night to you as soon as I get to my door.

Words I never meant to say to you, but I can't forget them ever
Every time I see you, a sad thought repeatedly tugs at my heart
I wonder how long and how far I will chase after this love that will never reach you
I pretended to listen to music and hid the traces of my tears from you
