Goodbye And I Love You
Goodbye and I Love You
Carpenters
I have something to tell you
I've been thinking these past few days
It might be time to leave
You're like a stranger
Then you're a lover
Never the same, always hard to believe
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Never knowing quite where I stand
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Falling both ways, nowhere to land
So constantly stranded
I can't understand it
This troubled life you've handed me
Is like the devil and the deep blue sea
If we go on much longer
If my doubts grow any stronger
Then I may have to let you go
If only to survive
Give me a reason, why should I stay here
I've tried too hard just to keep love alive
The Carpenters' song "Goodbye and I Love You" is a heart-wrenching ballad about a troubled relationship that has come to a crossroads. The singer of the song is struggling to come to a decision about whether or not to leave their partner. They are caught between two opposing feelings: wanting to say goodbye and wanting to say "I love you." They are feeling constantly stranded and unsure about their future.
The lyrics are full of conflicting emotions, and the singer expresses their feelings of confusion and frustration. The relationship seems to have become fraught and difficult, with the singer feeling like they are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Despite their struggles, they are still holding onto hope that the relationship can be saved, but they require a reason that makes sense to them to stay.
"Goodbye and I Love You" is a powerful and emotional song that captures the difficulty of making tough decisions in relationships. The Carpenters' Karen Carpenter's clear and tender voice amplifies these emotions and adds even more pathos to the song.
