Whatcha Gonna Do?
Pablo Cruise Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone
Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone

So you're having trouble with your romance
Well you better check it out before it goes
'Cause you may not be seein'
Things just the way you should
And you don't recognize what everybody knows

Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone
Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone

And all at once you're ready to hang it up
'Cause things didn't turn out the way you planned
And all your friends they're calling you a fool
'Cause you don't know a good thing
When you got it in your hands

Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone
Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone

And all at once you're ready to hang it up
'Cause things didn't turn out the way you planned
And all your friends they're calling you a fool
'Cause you don't know a good thing
When you got it in your hands

Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone

Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye
Whatcha gonna do when she is gone

Overall Meaning

The song Whatcha Gonna Do by Pablo Cruise is a reflection on the end of a romantic relationship. The lyrics express the confusion and sadness that one feels when their partner decides to leave them. The repetition of the lines "Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye, whatcha gonna do when she is gone" highlights the uncertainty and desperation that one feels when faced with the sudden loss of someone they love.

The verses emphasize the need to pay attention to the warning signs that precede a breakup. The lyrics suggest that people often ignore signs that their relationships are in trouble, failing to recognize that their significant other may be unhappy or considering leaving. The chorus repeats the question, forcing the listener to confront the reality of their situation and acknowledge that they may not be ready to face the aftermath of a breakup.

The final verse acknowledges the regret that often follows the end of a relationship. The singer suggests that the person left behind may feel foolish for not realizing the value of what they had until it was gone. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song serves as a reminder to the listener that the end of a relationship can happen suddenly and unexpectedly, and it is important to be aware of the signs that things are not going well.

That guitar solo must be one of the best for this kind of music.

Until now I didn't realize what a gift the 70's era was....
