While fully supportive of the Cuban Revolution, Milanés was critical of some aspects of the Cuban regime. He took official positions but allegedly avoided participating in pro-government campaigns; on January 25, 2007, he signed a petition supporting Puerto Rico's independence from the United States of America.
A number of artists have performed with him; among them Silvio Rodríguez, Joaquín Sabina, Ana Belén, Lilia Vera, Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Manuel, etc. Among his songs, "Yolanda", "Yo me quedo", "Amo a esta isla", "Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente", "Para Vivir", and "El breve espacio en que no estás" are especially well-known.
Since his first recording ("Versos sencillos de José Martí" in 1973), he issued more than 40 solo records, and many more in collaboration with other artists from Cuba, elsewhere in Latin America, and Spain.
The heyday of his creativity occurred probably in the early 1980s, with his records "El guerrero", "Yo me quedo", and "Comienzo y final de una verde mañana".
Delirio
Pablo Milanés Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
como es de inmenso
en el fondo de mi corazon
mi amor por ti
Este amor delirante
que abraza mi alma
es pasion que atormenta
Siempre tu estas conmigo
en mi tristeza,
estas en mi alegria
y en mi sufrir
Por que en ti se encierra
toda mi vida,
si no estas conmigo, mi bien,
no soy feliz
Es pasion, delirio
de estar contigo,
y yo soy dichoso, mi bien,
por que me quieres tambien
In Pablo Milanés's song Delirio, the singer expresses his immense love for someone special, whom he addresses as "mi bien" (my love). The song speaks about the love that consumes his soul, a passion that torments his heart. He sings about how this love is with him always, whether he is happy, sad or suffering. The person he loves has become the centerpiece of his life, and everything revolves around them. The singer is ecstatic that the person he loves is reciprocating his love and says that he is happy because she loves him too.
The overall sense of the song is one of obsession, passion, and pure love. The lyrics are simple but poignant, and they speak about the universal desire to love and be loved. The singer conveys his affection with a depth that is both powerful and sincere. The metaphor of delirio (delirium) as a representation of love is quite fitting as it suggests a form of uncontrollable madness or frenzy. It can be seen as the embodiment of the love that is so overwhelming that it drives the singer.
