While fully supportive of the Cuban Revolution, Milanés was critical of some aspects of the Cuban regime. He took official positions but allegedly avoided participating in pro-government campaigns; on January 25, 2007, he signed a petition supporting Puerto Rico's independence from the United States of America.
A number of artists have performed with him; among them Silvio Rodríguez, Joaquín Sabina, Ana Belén, Lilia Vera, Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Manuel, etc. Among his songs, "Yolanda", "Yo me quedo", "Amo a esta isla", "Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente", "Para Vivir", and "El breve espacio en que no estás" are especially well-known.
Since his first recording ("Versos sencillos de José Martí" in 1973), he issued more than 40 solo records, and many more in collaboration with other artists from Cuba, elsewhere in Latin America, and Spain.
The heyday of his creativity occurred probably in the early 1980s, with his records "El guerrero", "Yo me quedo", and "Comienzo y final de una verde mañana".

y te ofrescan el son y un cielo entero,
si te acuerdas de mi, no me menciones
porque vas a sentir amor del bueno.
Y si quieren saber de tu pasado
es preciso una mentira
di que vienes de all
The lyrics to Pablo Milanés's song "Un Mundo Raro" talk about love and the memories associated with it. The opening lines urge the listener to not mention the singer's name when they hear about love and hope because it will bring back memories of a past love that was real and passionate. The singer advises the listener to keep that love to themselves and not to share it with anyone else. The next lines urge the listener not to talk about their past because it might ruin their present. Instead, the singer asks the listener to lie about their past and say they come from nowhere because that way they will have a chance to start over and love again.
The song is about the pain of lost love and the unwillingness to share those emotions with anyone else. The singer urges the listener to keep their memories to themselves and start anew without the burden of the past. The overall message of the song is to cherish what we have lost but not to let that pain consume us.

When they speak to you of love and illusions
When someone talks to you about topics like love and dreams
And offer you sound and a whole sky
And promise you the world even if it's impossible to deliver
If you remember me, don't mention me
If you think about me, keep it to yourself because it might interfere with your current relationship
Because you're going to experience true love.
Because this new love has the potential to be long-lasting and genuine
And if they want to know about your past
If people are curious about your history
It's necessary to tell a lie
It may be best to conceal some things about your past
Say that you come from a different place
Tell them that you're from somewhere else, so they don't question you further
