This is so amazing. I love how it was arranged to work for the bassoon's range and it sounded so silly. Those super low notes that were played solo were really amazing.

Joseph Cowan

Dang this is crazy. Where did you even find this recording? It's kind of a silly arrangement, but the first bassoon is amazing.

Joseph Cowan

@Matthew Banks yeah I will never be even close. It's difficult to produce the high register without it tending to get thinner and weaker as it gets higher. I don't think I ever really figured out the combination of things that need to happen to do it properly. But that's why he's the master!

Matthew Banks

@Joseph Cowan of course he is for me the EPITOME of the "basson francais" sound of the last century. I play a Buffet 35L from 1974 (the same model as Allard for most of his career], and strive for this sound every day

Joseph Cowan

@Matthew Banks Oh yeah, of course I've heard him before. He has that distinct sound that is very round and rich.

Matthew Banks

That's Maurice Allard, Solo Bassoon of the Paris Opera orchestra 1951-83, and professor of the Paris Conservatory for 1957-1988. Easily my favorite bassoonist of the last century
