Dogs
Page France Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard it's getting windy so I'll set and watch you blow
I will chain you to my boat
I will carry you back home
And I won't say I love you cause it's all been said before
Let's not say it anymore
'cause love nothing here's for sure
They treat us like dogs
So we play along
We bark and we moan
And play them more songs
But when we blow away
And get out of this place
We go down like a shower
And up like a prince
I heard it's getting windy and we'll all be blown away
Did you tell me you're afraid?
Darling, you look so afraid
And I'm not sure what happens when everything here ends
But I hope it's like they said
And I hope it never ends
They treat us like gold
Dug up to be sold
We shine and we shake
Assuming our roles
But when we blow away
Up over this place
We go down like a shout
And up like a praise
I know it's hard to see me darling
Let your eyes adjust
If you go blind just trust
You are made out of my dust
I was made out of your dust
And the wind will carry us
In the ocean's evening dust
Up above the mountaintops
He/You will have the both of us

He Will have the both of us
He/You will have the both of us

Overall Meaning

In the song Dogs, Page France talks about the uncertain and transient nature of life, love and the world around us. The first verse speaks about the singer watching the wind blowing, implying the temporary and fleeting nature of life. The singer then talks about not saying "I love you" because it has all been said before and "love, nothing here's for sure." This line suggests that life is uncertain and unstable, and things are never permanent. The chorus talks about how society treats people like dogs, and how people comply with societal norms and expectations - "we bark and we moan and play them more songs." However, the singer implies that one can escape the societal expectations and be free away from the norm - "when we blow away and get out of this place, we go down like a shower and up like a prince."

In the second verse, the singer talks about how people are treated like gold, dug up to be sold, and how people put on a facade to fit societal standards - "We shine and we shake, assuming our roles." However, the singer again suggests that one can escape the societal roles and be liberated - "when we blow away up over this place, we go down like a shout and up like a praise." The final verse further emphasizes the transient nature of life and how we are all made of dust, with the wind carrying us to different parts of the world. The singer puts forward a hopeful belief that we will all end up in the same place, with "He/You" having both of us.

I remember when my brother burnt me a cd of Page France, Rachel Yamagata songs, etc. I loved it. Soundtrack of my outcast 7th grade year. Then I lost it, and I forgot the name of this song. The cd had Jesus and Trampoline and maybe Chariot. But I'm glad I found the title of this one. This should be my theme song to my freshman year. It's freakin phenomenal. :D
