Spine
Page France Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were my beliefs all rusting over
And I was the support within your spine.
We noticed that the stars were all exploding
So we stared into the sky until we were blind

Then cut off both of our arms and reached for nothing
And rewound the frames that twisted in our minds
And we watched separate lives in backwards motion
So we ended up connected at the sides

I wondered if the sky was just a ceiling
Adn you wondered if the ground was just a floor
Oh how the world will make a fool of a believer
I was a believer once before

You will come home
You will come home
You will come home

You will come home
You will come home
You will come home

You will come home
You will come home
You will come home

But the airways in our stomachs (You will come home)
Never seemed to find it funny (You will come home)
As we'd float above the ocean (You will come home)
But I loved you from a corner (You will come home)
Through the bricks and through the borders (You will come home)
Without motions (You will come home)

So we'll place all of our remains (You will come home)
Within a freezer (You will come home)
And believe that they won't spoil (You will come home)
And I'll trade being your spine (You will come home)
With another one who thinks (You will come home)
That he can keep your bones aligned (You will come home)
And I'll watch until he finds that (You will come home)
I'm your home (You will come home)

You will come home

Overall Meaning

The song "Spine" by Page France seems to be a conversation between two people who were once in a relationship. The first verse sets the stage by describing how one person was the foundation ("support within your spine") of the other person's beliefs which were now corroding. The second verse reveals that they both noticed the chaos and destruction happening in the world around them ("the stars were all exploding") and were trying to make sense of it all. They then made the decision to let go of everything ("cut off both of our arms and reached for nothing") and "rewind" the memories that were causing them pain.

The chorus then comes in with the repetition of "You will come home". However, in the next verse, they both acknowledge that they may never fully understand each other ("the airways in our stomachs never seemed to find it funny") and that even their love may not be enough to bridge the gap ("I loved you from a corner"). The bridge section talks about preserving the remains of the past and moving on in life with new people differing from the ones before. In the end, the person singing indicates that they will always be home for the other person.

Overall, the lyrics seem to be about finding peace and closure in a failing relationship where two people are trying to understand each other and the world around them. They make the decision to let go of what is holding them back and hope to find home with each other once again.

@Theyungcity23 I am a Page France fan and consider myself a Cotton Jones fan also, but I wouldnt say that I am happy that they made the change. Page France was amazing....Hello, Dear Wind era PF is about as good as anything else I have heard in my 35 years on this planet. Nau was putting out quality songs on a weekly basis and putting them out for free. The albums were so creative and positive. Cotton Jones is great, but Id trade it all to have Page France back.
