Ballad
Pailhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pick up the Goddamn phone
I pay to hear you lie
I saw you on T.V.
There's nothing here for me

I'll pay the price
So pick up the Goddamn phone
I'm just a voice you cannot see
But you act as if you know me

You chat away while I bleed
Then take my money

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pailhead's song "Ballad" are fairly straightforward, yet they reveal a powerful message about the dynamics of power and control in the music industry. The opening line, "Pick up the Goddamn phone, I pay to hear you lie," sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer demands the attention of someone in a position of authority, likely a music industry executive or promoter. The line "I saw you on T.V. / There's nothing here for me" underscores the disillusionment and disappointment the singer feels with the industry and its players, suggesting that the promises made by these gatekeepers are hollow and unfulfilling.

The second stanza, "I'll pay the price / So pick up the Goddamn phone / I'm just a voice you cannot see / But you act as if you know me," highlights the power dynamic at play, with the singer acknowledging that they are willing to pay whatever it takes to get the attention of the person on the other end of the line. It also draws attention to the insincerity of the industry figures who make promises they have no intention of keeping, and the frustration of being reduced to a faceless, voiceless commodity.

The final lines "You chat away while I bleed / Then take my money" are particularly poignant, as they suggest that the industry not only takes advantage of artists' vulnerability and desperation, but actively profits from it. Overall, "Ballad" is a searing indictment of the music industry and the power structures that govern it, revealing the harsh realities that artists face in their pursuit of success.

I was in a chain record store, thumbing through the meager "punk rock" section when this actually came on the speakers in the store. The moment I heard Mackaye's voice, I was like "WTF??" I knew the music belonged to the Ministry camp, but hearing them with him on the vocals blew my 14 year old mind. Still one of my ATF Ep's ever released. Timeless.

Probably my favorite song of the 'Trait' ep. Makes me feel euforic.

I hadn't listened to this EP for years but got back into it last year......brilliant track, thanks for uploading it.

I like to think that this song, So What, and Bloodlines are a musical trilogy. They all sound the same and have a similar musical structure, but each new one is a little faster and louder and darker, and they all have lyrics about feeling ashamed and angry and deprived of life. Also, the first two have really long and amusing audio samples, the last one doesn't but it was made specifically for a role playing video game that has a lot of voice acting, so it kind of does.

This is one of my all time favorites! These samples are incredible

This is a great track. I came across Pailhead a few years ago and I think it´s Al´s best side project which is as good as Ministry´s Mind is a...and Land of rape nad honey. RevCo have a couple of good songs but this is just...different.
