In My Mind
Painters And Dockers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything is melting, everything is melting but
Let's pretend that everything i do is helping

I got the latest fashion so thats all that matters
Follow me on instagram and look at me make sushi platters

Everything's collapsing, everything's collapsing
Let's all turn our heads and pretend it ain't happenin

Look at all the likes i got, i feel
So awesome

Dopamine feels good to me
And helps anxiety to blossom

I'm at home in my phone
Mindlessly scrolling, watching time rolling by

Wealth controls the masses with a good distraction
I present to you: two monkeys overreacting

Here comes another hurricane, it must be "godsent"
Petroleum is good to me, gotta throw away any evidence

I'm at home as a drone
Mindlessly trusting habits of rusting life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'In My Mind' by Painters And Dockers are a strong commentary on today's society and the obsession with social media and material possessions while real-world issues are ignored. The first verse talks about everything melting, which is a metaphor for the world falling apart around us, but the singer is pretending that everything is okay and that his actions are helping. This is a reflection of how people try to ignore the issues and pretend that they are doing their part by posting on social media and not doing anything in real life. The line "Let's pretend that everything I do is helping" shows how people justify their actions, even if they are not contributing to solving real problems.

The second verse talks about how people are fixated on the latest fashion and Instagram likes. The singer is showcasing how people are ignoring the problems around them and instead focusing on their online personas. The line "Look at all the likes I got, I feel so awesome" highlights how people are addicted to social validation and how it fuels their ego. The bridge talks about how people are mindlessly scrolling through their phones, ignoring real-world issues, and just trusting the habits of a rusting life. The last line "mindlessly trusting habits of rusting life" is a powerful statement about how people have grown accustomed to their current lifestyle, and are ignorant of the real issues that need to be addressed.

Under rated crew who blew some minds. Never got true recognition they deserved. Paul Stewart one smart cookie. You needed a v sharp intellect to surf The Dockers wave make no error. Seldom did one clearly understand where The Dockers were coming from by listening to a song once. Nup. They were actually ahead of their time they were that GOOD. Their best act was they never took themselves too seriously. And therein lay their key to success. I'm a Kiwi and a mate put me on to them around '83 when I was 20. At the time I was really in to Cold Chisel, The Angels, Hunters & Collectors, The Church, Icehouse, Midnight Oil and a wee bit of Rose Tattoo. I thought most Kiwi bands at the time were a little too soft for me. By that I mean not only in sound but more in 'being around the block' if you were...more sassy, more street wise. I loved the Australian Pub Rock genre and while yes Kiwis certainly enjoyed a similar 'Pub Rock' genre/scene, when comparing to Australian Pub Rock we were a distant 2nd unfortunately. At the time my favorite Kiwi bands were Mi-Sex, Th' Dudes, Dragon, Hello Sailor, The Dance Exponents, The Muttonbirds, Shona Laing, and a few Split Enz songs and quite a few 'Dunedin Sound' bands such as The Chills, The Clean, The Verlaines, The Straight Jacket Fits, The Bats, Chris Knox/Tall Dwarfs. But back to the band here. The Dockers will go down in history as a 'sort of' band in Australia that really is not at all what they should be recognized as. They were a good time act who were damn clever and excellent at what they did...entertain. Thank you Dockers I continue to love your groove and appreciate you like fine wine - with age you get better. Cheers.
