A.I.
Palisades Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was once a time
when I knew what I was made of
yeah I had some veins they'd pump blood
but then I realized that it's easier to be less alive
and I've replaced my mind with some kind of machine
dead inside

I like it better when I'm made of bolts
no human flesh could withstand the threshold
I recommend advice to all my friends
you'll never have to be alone again
I like it better when you're made of skin
there's no way I'd be caught dead in that again
cause being real and having heart is something that I failed at from the start

so I took my time, started slow
carefully removing
appendages, all the parts that broke
and I was willfully replacing them with metal parts
cause it's easier without a heart
and with iron lungs, I can breath after all the deeds you've done

replace my heart with a machine
I left my body in the street
so none of you can ever hurt me, hurt me
repair my head so I can think
about the way you treated me
so none of you can ever hurt me

I never wanted this, never wanted this to be me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Palisades's song A.I. delve into the concept of a human being replacing their organic parts with mechanical ones in order to become less vulnerable to emotional pain. The singer at one point had organic parts, but quickly found that it was too difficult to cope with the emotions that came with it. In their eyes, being without emotion, being dead inside and replacing their brain with a machine is preferable. They believe that they can't be hurt by anyone if they're made of bolts and metal parts. The idea of a human becoming more machine-like is an exploration of our increasing reliance on technology and our growing dependence on our devices.

The singer advises their friends to do the same, replacing their organic parts with mechanical ones so that they also can become indifferent to emotions and immune to pain. The lyrics reveal a certain detachment from their humanity, as the singer seems to have accepted the loss of their organic parts. The song highlights the idea that humans have the frightening potential to detach themselves from their own emotions, ultimately becoming devoid of their natural attributes such as love and compassion, which makes us humans.

Overall, the lyrics to Palisades's A.I. presents a dystopian view of a possible future where people are more machine than human, especially if their rationality is fatally flawed.

justin_1702 There isn't much "flavor" in songs now a days, but this song isn't "bland" you're just not paying attention to it's value, try reading the lyrics with it while you're feeling really bad. you'll understand.

@trevorloree9339

I saw them live in Mesa, AZ at Warped Tour '15. They put on an amazing show. I couldn't have asked for a better first concert!

@livecarsonreaction

First heard this song when I was in high school, thought it was super catchy. Now I listen to it and it's too relatable. But I'm glad they put the feeling into words.
