Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?
Paloma Faith Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He preached the values of deception
Changing shadows by a shapeshifter rules
Tales are never just for fools
The court of conscience came before me
Presenting me with a heavenly angel
You took my hand and ask me, truth aside
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
Just close your eyes and make believe
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
I am happy to deceive you
He stood as tall as redwood trees
Drank tea from a seamstress thimble
Didn't want to speak, the honest truth
So I spit out lies that aimed to soothe
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
Just close your eyes and make believe
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
I am happy to deceive you
Secrets, lying, falling veils
I can be who you want me to be
Sacred, lies in, telling tales
I can be who you want me to be
But do you want me?
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
Just close your eyes and make believe
Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
I am happy to deceive you
Sacred lies in, telling tales
I can be who you wants me to be
I can be who you wants me to be
But do you want me?
But do you want me?
The lyrics of Paloma Faith's song "Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?" tell a story about deception and the need for truth in relationships. The song begins with the singer encountering a prophet on All Saints Day. The prophet preaches about the value of deception and the power of shape-shifting. The singer then encounters the "court of conscience" who presents her with a heavenly angel. The angel asks the singer whether she wants the truth or something beautiful. The singer responds with lies that aim to soothe.
The second verse introduces another character, an individual who the singer is happy to deceive. The singer describes him as someone who is tall and drinks tea from a seamstress thimble. The singer admits to spitting out lies that aim to please this person. The chorus repeats the question of whether the person wants the truth or something beautiful. The song ends with the singer questioning whether the person really wants her, and if they do, if they want her for who she really is or just the person she pretends to be.
Overall, the song is about the tension between truth and beauty in relationships. The singer acknowledges the power of deception to please others but ultimately questions whether it is worth sacrificing her authentic self to do so.

I photographed her recently for a children's charity concert. She was so down to earth, brilliant with the kids, went the extra mile and her performance was electrifying! Well done Paloma!

Is it really that long ago? The last concert my wife and I saw together, tickets bought for me on my birthday by my daughters. Thirty one years together and eight years apart.
