Make Your Own Kind of Music
Paloma Faith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody can tell you
There's only one song worth singing
They may try and sell you
'Cause it hangs them up
To see someone like you

But you gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along

You're gonna be nowhere
The loneliest kind of lonely
It may be rough going
Just to do your thing is the hardest thing to do

But you gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along

So if you cannot take my hand
And if you must be going, I will understand

'Cause You gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along
Oh you gotta make your own kind of music
Sing your own kind of song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paloma Faith's song "Make Your Own Kind of Music" convey a powerful message about individuality and staying true to oneself despite societal pressures and the fear of being different. The song urges listeners to embrace their uniqueness and express themselves authentically through their own personal style and creativity.

The song opens by emphasizing that nobody has the authority to dictate what kind of music is worth singing. It highlights the attempts made by others to sell their own version of what is deemed acceptable or popular, as it unsettles them to witness someone who dares to be different. However, the lyrics encourage the listener to disregard these influences and find their own voice.

The chorus echoes the main message, asserting the importance of making your own kind of music and singing your own special song, regardless of whether or not anyone else joins in. It acknowledges that pursuing one's passion and individuality may lead to feelings of loneliness or facing challenges. Yet, it emphasizes that sticking to one's own path and staying true to oneself is the most difficult, yet crucial thing to do.

The lyrics also speak to the understanding that not everyone will share the same perspective or choose to support one's individuality. The line "So if you cannot take my hand, and if you must be going, I will understand" suggests that the singer accepts and respects that not everyone will be willing to embrace their own uniqueness.

Overall, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" serves as an empowering anthem, encouraging listeners to embrace their individuality, express themselves authentically, and be unafraid to pursue their own artistic vision.

A brave thing for someone as young as yourself to attempt, an iconic Mama Cass song. Damn girl did you do a fantastic job!! Brilliant version!!!

@chris bond originally recorded by the Will-o-bees!! in 1968 (cass recorded it in 1969, I prefer cass's version)

@You Joker Don't be a silly nit picking little boy, Paloma Faith was not copying, she was singing naturally, this and Mamma Cass Eliot are brilliant with this number, but of course are totally supersonic in their own right.

You Joker

Not really. She's older than Cass was when she died and Palomas voice is tonally akin to Cass. As for the music, it could have almost been lifted straight from the original. A good solid cover version.

Robert Orr

No kidding Gary! Hands on the absolutely the Best tribute to Mamma Cass.
I clearly remember Mamma Cass in my childhood. One very impressive voice and sadly shunned from popularity because of her weight.

blonde7000

This is absolutely superb i regard it as a national anthem if you feel low.
I heard a little girl aged 4 sing it in a shop and she was so happy, which made me happy :)

Hugh Neil Rendell

I agree, happiness is contagious

This song has a nice message, that everyone is different in a good way and how we all have our own choices in life.
I came back to this song because I just watched Free Guy in theatres today.

Well, until you have ADHD, and you have endless energy, have ton of good plans that works cos some of them has been furthered by your friends/team, but you're absolutely unable to focus and make those plans real with perseverance.
