I can remember watching the show with my family. We were never offended by what we saw. My late mother thought he was marvellous. All of the jokes were on him. Benny was well travelled in Europe, and spoke several languages. I think the big factor with ending the show was the cost of making it. ITV did not want any more expensive productions, and would rather fill in air time with cheap quiz shows and American TV series. A great shame indeed. After the show was axed he seemed to lose the will to live, and soon his health declined. A great British gentleman, God bless you Benny!

There will always be certain comedians that I grew up watching on TV that have a special place reserved in my heart and my memories forever. Benny was definitely at the top of the list. I have missed his unique brand of comedy and shall cherish it and him for the rest of my life. Thank you, Benny for all the love, laughter, and light heartedness you brought to the world during that time. One guy is white with a middle class voice and the other is Benny in black face. It was 1970 ish after all. The black guy is talking ghetto like a blackspoitation film. Then the TV goes funny and they switch roles with the white guy talking ghetto gangster and the black guy speaking in a middle class voice. A very radical sketch - showing that black people could actually talk like any white person. Black people were very under-represented on TV at the time.

A story I heard (and I hope it's true): Benny Hill visited Charles Chaplin in Switzerland, sometime in the 70s. Whilst he was there, he noticed that Chaplin had a full shelf of recordings of The Benny Hill show. Benny Hill apparently broke down in tears when he realised his comedy hero was a massive fan of his work.

It's a nice story and I really do hope it's true.

When Thames Television lost their broadcast licence, they were desperate to re-sign Benny in order to create new 'international' programmes which they would sell to existing Thames Television customers around the world. At the time (1991) I was liaising with Benny and the BBC, identifying clips that Benny wanted to use in the ''World's Favourite Clown' programme, and was subsequently tasked with getting Benny to at least meet with Thames executives to discuss this possibility. However Benny told me that he was already in talks or had signed with Central Television to do shows for them. Benny was a great soul, well loved by the studio crews. I started working on the international versions of The Benny Hill SHow in 1984 and continued until the last show - I will never forget Benny and his shows. RIP Benny

I think it is a measure of the man that at a time of lots of sexual harrasment claims in the broadcasting industry, not a single woman who worked with Benny has ever made a claim against him, it would have been very easy given the state of the gutter press in the UK for one of them to make a lot of cash out of it, but they always show love and respect for him whenever they talk of him, as for Hills Angels somewhat raunchy costumes, the women were shown them and if they were the slightest bit uncomfortable with them, then the whole lot were scraped, and lest we forget those who spoke out about him loudest (Mary Whitehouse etcetc) were the ones passing Jimmy Saviles show off as good wholesome family fun.

Don't get hill mixed up with red Skelton or Carol Burnett where they played characters down on their luck. Benny Hill's show aired in my country until late 80's, in night time. It was a success, particulary among male audience of course.
Despite poor translation it was a great hit due to its visual designs and funny music. It gave me LOL and something to remember those years by.

I have the Box set of Benny Hill Shows and one cannot but be impressed by the amount of cutting and special effects it took to make those silent comedic scenes . Benny also had the gift of being able to look into the eyes of his audience and engage and draw them into his naughty little boy world, the only other comedian I knew who could do this was Frankie Howerd.

Benny was very funny in his heyday. Most of the sketches were really amusing and easy to watch. As with most comedy acts he eventually started to run out of steam and the final shows he did were nowhere near as funny. I'll always think of him as one of the best television comedians we had. Hs shows had a lot of the saucy humour of Pantomime, even that has been somewhat sanitised these days as a lot of the humour no longer goes over the heads of the kids. That generation remembered the war and wanted to make merry. Use to watch Benny late at night because anything risky could not be on before 11:00pm but was sorry to see it go. Sometimes you have to take things at face value and not try to find some deep meaning to it and that's the problem, people have forgotten how to take comedy at face value for what it is, COMEDY.

Watershed was 9 o'clock. Kenny Everett had even more raunchier dancers than Benny and he was not cancelled. Benny was dropped because his audience figures halved over his last 10 years. He simply was not as popular as he used to be nor as popular as you believed him to be.

At least a channel called That's TV here in the UK still has the bulls to show the Benny Hill Show. I forgot how great he was with wordplay as well as visual gags. I always thought it strange that 'The Two Ronnies' a lot of the time did similar risque humour to Benny Hill yet are lauded as family fun entertainment while Benny wasn't.

I’m French and I used to watch the Benny Hill show when I was a kid. It was replayed many times on national French TV channels. I don’t remember anyone complaining about the show, at any point. To us, it was quite family friendly. Probably not as smart as other comedies for grown up people, though. But still a good time with kids and family together.

I was a great fan of the Benny Hill show. I know some of his scenes would be risque today but they to my mind did not under mind women and all the women who worked with him loved him as a kind gentle man. His earlier shows were very intelligently put together and his acting skills for comedic effect were highly intelligent. Sadly in this age of PC and Wokeism we will not see his kind of humour anymore. But his shows will always be remembered by me in giving great joy and laughter. Rest in peace Benny!

I grew up adoring Benny Hill in the 70's. His warmth and humour will always be his gift to us all. I wish he'd voluntarily retired in the early 1980's when it was obvious UK taste in comedy had moved on, rather than his show being understandably cancelled in 1989. He was a wealthy enough man to have retired early, sat back and enjoyed life.

I think it's interesting that Benny Hill lost popularity because of his portrayal of women. Fast forward to the 2023 and we don't even know what a woman is. The sad fact is that Benny Hill was not at all the misogynist that he was made out to be. He loved women and was known to be very polite and kind but was extremely shy and lived out his days alone. It's worth bearing in mind that the regular portrayal of scantily clad women in tv and film was par for the course in the day, so Benny Hill was hardly Robinson Crusoe in that respect.

there was never a question of funding running short because over 100 countries ordered The Benny Hill Show making it extremely profitable and increasingly more so at time he was fired by a BBC producer pretending to be freelance who went back to the BBC after ruining Thames and so did Everett..
Benny show only became racier whilst Kenny Everett was at Thames TV whose show dancers (Got Gossip) on earlier in evening was much sleazier than Bennys Angels so he felt he had to compete but he toned it down after Everett went to the BBC but they noticably didn't want Hot Gossip coming with him.
Typically the planted leftists in media stirring fake hysteria against Benny never acknowledged his toning the Angels routines down still criticising him in 1989 as if it was 1981 and also Jodie Foster in The Accused casted a grim judgemental atmosphere over comedy like Bennys whilst slugs like Ben Elton lied that Benny chased women in parks when it was virtually always Benny being chased by everyone.

"The Benny Hill Show" wasn't a conventional series as such but an eagerly awaited 'special' about four times a year. OK, back then there were only 3 or 4 TV channels but at school in the '70's it was always the subject of conversation the day after transmission, similarly when I worked in an open plan office in the '80's. If anything, the women praised it more than the men, and everyone was disappointed and perplexed when they heard the show had been cancelled. It was widely reported at the time that the reason for cancellation was 'political correctness'.
Fortunately Network Releasing made his Thames shows available on DVD so I can watch them whenever I want. There was a documentary on TV several years ago in which 'straight man' Henry McGee was very scathing of the way Benny was dismissed. RIP Benny . . . and Henry.

My first time abroad was to London with a tours group. I asked our Tour Guide what ever happen to Benny Hill since I had not seen him on American Tv for a long time. The tour guide said he did not know. No one had seen him for years.

The next day Benny Hill was on all the front pages of the News papers after he passed away.

Benny's many girls spoke about Benny saying he was NEVER 'inappropriate' with any of them but kind and becoming a good friend. When ITV sacked him it literally 'killed' him. He died alone and very depressed in his apartment. A sad end to this harmless funny man. RIP Benny

Ray Galton told me a lovely story about him. One of his team of girls was going out to dinner with him and he picked her up from her flat in Baker St. Once on the pavement she saw the opportunity and called a cab which stopped for them. As he got into the cab he muttered "What did you do that for? there's a bus stop over there". He was also obsessed with a cheap cologne called "4711" which he used to soak himself in. Fortunately it was poor quality and the smell soon wore off.

I remember watching Benny Hill as a kid in the early 1980's. Some of the gags and all the lady parts were life changing as a young boy :)
Years later, I'm married and a while back my wife told me a story of her experience with Benny Hill. It was the 1990's and she was checking the TV guide and found "Benny Hill" so she tuned in. It was not Benny Hill, but rather "Benny Hinn". Big difference!! 😀

Benny was a milkman in Eastleigh and lived in The Nook. The lady he lodged with introduced him to amdram at the town hall. His song Ernie has the line " He galloped into Market Street, his badge upon his chest" This refers to Matket Street, Eastleigh and the badge Hanns Dairy for whom he worked

To recreate Benny Hill or copy his format would be akin to a new Laurel and Hardy, it just cannot be done. It was at times a little bit naughty entertainment but far from offensive, a bit like the carry on films a harmless giggle. A few took offence the rest of us took happy memories of few half hour escapes from the real horrors.
