Panic! at the Disco recorded their first demos while they were in high school. Shortly after, the band recorded and released their debut studio album, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2005). Popularized by the second single, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", the album was certified triple platinum in the US. In 2006, founding bassist Brent Wilson was fired from the band during an extensive world tour and subsequently replaced by Jon Walker. The band's second album, Pretty. Odd. (2008), was preceded by the single "Nine in the Afternoon". That album marked a significant departure from the sound of the band's debut. In 2009, Ross and Walker formed a new band, the Young Veins, leaving Urie and Smith as the sole remaining members of Panic! at the Disco.
Continuing as a duo, Urie and Smith released a new single, "New Perspective", for the movie Jennifer's Body, and recruited bassist Dallon Weekes and guitarist Ian Crawford as touring musicians for live performances. Weekes was later inducted into the band's lineup as a full-time member in 2010. The band's third studio album, Vices & Virtues (2011), was recorded solely by Urie and Smith in 2010, produced by John Feldmann and Butch Walker. Crawford departed once the tour cycle for Vices & Virtues ended in 2012.
As a three-piece, Urie, Smith, and Weekes recorded and released the band's fourth studio album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, in 2013. Prior to the release of the album, Smith unofficially left the band due to health and drug-related issues, leaving Urie and Weekes as the remaining members. The duo recruited guitarist Kenneth Harris and drummer Dan Pawlovich as touring musicians for live performances.
In 2015, Smith officially left the band after not performing live with them since his departure in 2013. Shortly thereafter, Weekes reverted to being a touring member once again, resulting in Panic! becoming Urie's solo project. In April 2015, "Hallelujah" was released as the first single from Panic! at the Disco's fifth studio album, Death of a Bachelor (2016). In December 2017, Weekes officially announced his departure from the band. In March 2018, Panic! at the Disco released "Say Amen (Saturday Night)", the lead single from its sixth studio album, Pray for the Wicked (2018), which was released in June. Panic! at the Disco's seventh studio album, Viva Las Vengeance, was released on August 19, 2022.
On January 24, 2023, Urie officially announced that Panic! at the Disco would be disbanding following the conclusion of the Viva Las Vengeance Tour.

Fantastic posing greed
Then we should feed our jewelry to the sea
For diamonds do appear to be
Just like broken glass to me
And then she said she can't believe
Genius only comes along
Tripping eyes, and flooded lungs
Northern downpour sends its love
Hey moon, please forget to fall down
Hey moon, don't you go down
Sugarcane in the easy mornin'
Weathervanes my one and lonely
The ink is running toward the page
It's chasin' off the days
Look back at boat feet
And that winding knee
I missed your skin when you were east
You clicked your heels and wished for me
Through playful lips made of yarn
That fragile Capricorn
Unraveled words like moths upon old scarves
I know the world's a broken bone
But melt your headaches, call it home
Hey moon, please forget to fall down
Hey moon, don't you go down
Sugarcane in the easy mornin'
Weather vanes my one and lonely
Sugarcane in the easy mornin'
Weather vanes my one and lonely
Sugarcane in the easy mornin'
Weather vanes my one and lonely
Sugarcane (hey moon) in
(Hey moon) the easy mornin'
Weathervanes (hey moon) my
(Hey moon) one and lonely
Sugarcane (hey moon) in (hey moon)
The easy (hey moon) mornin'
Weathervanes (hey moon) my (hey moon)
One (hey moon) and lonely
[Continues in background:]
Sugarcane (hey moon) in (hey moon)
The easy (hey moon) mornin'
Weathervanes (hey moon) my (hey moon)
One (hey moon) and lonely
Hey moon, please forget to fall down
Hey moon, don't you go down
You are at the top of my lungs
Drawn to the ones who never yawn
Hey moon, please forget to fall down
Hey moon, don't you go down
You are at the top of my lungs
Drawn to the ones who never yawn
The lyrics to Panic! at the Disco's song "Northern Downpour" are full of abstract imagery and metaphors. The first verse seems to suggest that our pursuit of material wealth is empty and ultimately futile. The line "If all our life is but a dream / Fantastic posing greed" implies that the desire for material possessions is simply a product of our imaginations. The suggestion to "feed our jewelry to the sea" is a symbolic act of rejecting materialism in favor of something more pure and natural. The line "For diamonds do appear to be / Just like broken glass to me" suggests that something we consider valuable and precious might, in fact, be of little worth.
The second verse shifts focus to a more personal story of love and separation. The line "And then she said she can't believe / Genius only comes along / In storms of fabled foreign tongues" might be interpreted as someone lamenting the loss of a lover who they saw as a genius, or as someone mourning the fact that their own genius only emerges in times of stress and difficulty. The line "Northern downpour sends its love" suggests that the singer is reaching out to the object of their affection across a vast distance, using the metaphor of a rainstorm to convey their emotions.
The repeated lines about the moon and sugarcane serve as a kind of chorus or refrain, with the singer imploring the moon not to set as a symbol of their desire to hold onto their feelings and to cling to those who make them feel alive.
Overall, the lyrics to "Northern Downpour" are dreamlike and poetic, weaving together personal and abstract imagery to create a melancholic mood.

Northern Downpour is my absolute favorite song. I like Brendon's voice better in the original but I like the music and Ryan's voice better in this. I love both versions and in my opinion no one will ever harmonize with Brendon as well as Ryanβππβ

Yesterday at 3.40 am I don't know what happened to me but I suddenly felt like I need more Ryan Ross in my life, so today I spent my whole day listening to 'Fever' and searching for live recordings of p!atd concerts from 2009. I literally cried over 'I write sins' for the first time in my life. And now I'm crying again. Thank you for finding this version and sharing it with us.
