Born on born 9th January 1987 in Paisley, Scotland, his father is of Italian descent and his mother Glaswegian, although his father's family have been in Scotland for four generations. Nutini had no formal music training, and was expecting to follow his father into the family fish and chip shop business. He was first encouraged to sing by his music-loving grandfather and a teacher at his school who recognised his talent. He left school to work as a roadie and to sell T-shirts for Speedway and spent three years learning the music business, performing live, alone and with a band, and working as a studio hand at Glasgow's Park Lane Studio.
His big chance came when he attended a concert for David Sneddon's return to his home town of Paisley at the beginning of 2003. Sneddon was delayed, and as the winner of an impromptu pop quiz, Nutini was given the chance to perform a couple of songs on stage during the wait. The favourable reaction of the crowd impressed another member of the audience, who offered to become his manager.
A Daily Record journalist, John Dingwall, saw him performing at the Queen Margaret Union, and invited him to appear live on Radio Scotland. Still only seventeen, he moved to London, and performed regularly at the Bedford pub in Balham whilst still legally too young to drink alcohol himself. Other radio and live appearances followed, including two live acoustic spots on Radio London, The Hard Rock Cafe, and support slots for Amy Winehouse and KT Tunstall.
His debut album, These Streets, produced by Ken Nelson (Coldplay/Gomez), was released on 17th July 2006, and immediately entered the U.K. album charts at number three. Many of the songs on the album, including "Last Request" and "Rewind", were inspired by a turbulent relationship with a girlfriend, and "Jenny Don't Be Hasty" is a true story about encounters with an older woman.
On 29th May 2009 Nutini released his second studio album, Sunny Side Up, after the first single from that album, "Candy", was released on 18th May. In July, he appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, performing "Coming Up Easy". This was released as the second single from the album on 10th August.
Rainbows
Paolo Nutini Lyrics

And everything is the same to you
You looking up at the sky among the sea all blue
You started it then such a lost for words
Oh thank God you never thought this through
Feel the breeze as it slowly starts to burn on you
When I see rainbows, I just fly
When I see rainbows, yes I feel so high
We're kissing rainbows yes you and I
You started it then such a lost of words
What I first thought what you heard about me
There is a guarantee plenty more is on it's way
Oh and I'm singing songs for the first time
And there is a chance to be yourself
Take you business and share with everyone else
When I see rainbows, I just fly
We're kissing rainbows, you and I
When I see rainbows yes I feel so high
We are kissing rainbows, bloody rainbows in the sky
Coming up on what you wait
And everything is the same to you
You looking up at the sky among the sea all blue
Oh when I see rainbows, I just fly
We're kissing rainbows, you and I
Oh when I see rainbows yes I feel so high
We're kissing rainbows, bloody rainbows in the sky
When I see rainbows yes I feel so high
We're kissing rainbows, in the sky
When I see rainbows yes I feel so high
We're kissing rainbows yes in the sky
The opening lines set the scene for the song: the singer is waiting for something to happen, but everything feels the same. The image of looking up at the sky among the sea all blue suggests a sense of being lost or adrift, perhaps in a feeling of ennui or uncertainty. The singer feels a sense of gratitude that they didn't think things through, which implies that overthinking could have prevented them from embracing the moment and feeling the sensations that arise from it. As the breeze starts to burn on them, there is a sense of intensity or passion that is building.
The chorus centers around the metaphor of rainbows, which can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and wonder to nostalgia and hope. The singer feels elevated and liberated when they see rainbows, which allows them to soar and kiss them in the sky. There is a sense of openness and connection between the singer and the listener, as they invite them to share in this experience. The second verse repeats the themes of feeling lost and misunderstood, but there is a sense of optimism that there is more to come, and that the singer can express themselves through singing and sharing their talent with others. The third verse echoes the first verse, creating a sense of circularity or repetition, but also emphasizes the transformative power of rainbows to make the singer feel alive and connected to the world.
Overall, "Rainbows" is a song about finding beauty and meaning in the midst of mundane or challenging circumstances, and the transcendent power of imagination and creativity. It suggests that sometimes the most meaningful experiences are the ones that can't be fully explained or analyzed, but are felt on a visceral level.
