Lifeline
Papa Roach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a boy
I didn't care 'bout a thing
It was me and this world and a broken dream
I was blaming myself
For all that was going wrong

I was way out there
On the wrong side of town
And the ones that I loved
I started pushing 'em out
Then I realized
That it was all my fault

I've been looking for a lifeline
For what seems like a lifetime
I'm drowning in the pain
Breaking down again
Looking for a lifeline

So I put out my hand
And I asked for some help
We tore down the walls I built around myself
I was struck by the light
And I fell to the ground

I've been looking for a lifeline
For what seems like a lifetime
I'm drowning in the pain
Breaking down again
Looking for a lifeline
Is there anybody out there?
Can you pull me from this ocean of despair?
I'm drowning in the pain
Breaking down again
Looking for a lifeline

You know a heart of gold
Won't take you all the way
And in a world so cold
It's hard to keep the faith
I'm never gonna fade away!

Yeah!

I've been looking for a lifeline
For what seems like a lifetime
I'm drowning in the pain
Breaking down again
Looking for a lifeline
Is there anybody out there?
Can you pull me from this ocean of despair?
I'm drowning in the pain

Breaking down again
Looking for a lifeline (looking for a lifeline)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Papa Roach's song "Lifeline" are about the struggle to find hope and help in a time of despair. The singer, reflecting on his childhood, realizes that he had pushed away those he loved by blaming himself for everything that went wrong. He then sings about his search for a "lifeline," a metaphor for someone or something to help him out of the pain he feels. He puts out his hand and asks for help, and as a result, the walls he built around himself come down and he is struck by the "light."

The chorus repeats the singer's desire for a "lifeline," emphasizing his desperation and need. He asks if there is anyone out there who can pull him from the "ocean of despair" and help him to not "fade away."

The overall message of the song is hopeful, as it implies that people can find the help they need if they are willing to ask for it. The metaphor of diving underwater and drowning in pain is one that many listeners can relate to, and the song offers the idea that there is hope if they can reach out for help.

Suffocation... no leaving.
.
Slit your shit once,
Figure out,
Souls just transfer bodies,
Experience pain,
And keep breathing.
.
Suicide becomes a hell of a reality.
Souls fluidly (almost unknowingly) transfer bodies,
Hell is everything u know absent of love.
.
No point in trying to leave the torture of eternity

This was one of my dads favorite songs.
He committed suicide back in 2013 when I was 12.
I fell in love with papa roach because of him.
Thank you guys for getting me through the first couple years of his passing. ♥️

A friend of mine met these guys randomly while they were doing a concert in my town. They were looking for dry cleaners for their outfits for the concert. He said they were fun, and down to earth. What a great band, what great music.
