Twisted and Turned
Parabelle Lyrics

Are you a proud little body
If I don’t look right
Well then you're not looking right
You see the sun doesn’t set so the dark can reign
It sets so it can get away
But why can’t I get away from the sun
If this is yesterday all over again
I failed, I’m twisted and turned
Why don’t you understand me
I'm not a lesson to be learned
I'm twisted and turned
Are you a brave little body
If it don’t feel right
Well then it’s not really right
And your words never tell what your heart can’t feel
Your face tells me what I want to hear
And your eyes tell me that you know
That this is yesterday all over again
I failed, I’m twisted and turned
Why don’t you understand me
I'm not a lesson to be learned
I'm twisted and turned
Only when (only when) the dust settles in
(raise the bar to the next lie, raise the lie to the next height)
Only then (only then) all the fireflies will find their wings
(raise the bar to the next lie, raise the lie to the next height)
Only when we lie
(raise the bar to the next lie, raise the lie to the next height)
And only then all the fireflies will find their wings
I failed, I’m twisted and turned
Why don’t you understand me
I'm not a lesson to be learned
I'm twisted and turned
You failed, don't you know to look
You failed, I'm twisted and turned
The lyrics to Parabelle's song "Twisted and Turned" explore the themes of brokenness, misunderstanding and the struggle to escape the past. The first verse begins with the singer admitting to being broke, but then challenges the listener by asking if they are too proud to acknowledge their own brokenness. The next lines imply that the singer is not seen in the right light, which could mean that their struggles are not being acknowledged or it could be an existential question about perspective. The following lines about the sun suggest the cyclical nature of life and how sometimes it feels like we are stuck in an endless loop of our own mistakes.
The second verse continues with the theme of misunderstanding, suggesting that words can't always express what is truly in our hearts. The singer's desire for honesty is revealed in the line "Your face tells me what I want to hear, And your eyes tell me that you know". The bridge of the song adds an interesting layer, as it seems to suggest that lying may be the only way to move forward ("raise the bar to the next lie, raise the lie to the next height"), and that perhaps only then, after this process of deception, can the "fireflies" (symbolic of freedom or accomplishment?) find their wings.
Overall, the lyrics to "Twisted and Turned" are a poignant reflection on the complexities of the human experience, and a reminder that sometimes we need to accept our own brokenness to move forward.
