Jaded
Paradise Lost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Opaque the dissident establishment
That we all suffer
Refill the porous shell with words that mean so many things

Words mean so many things

The feeling can't avoid you
Stoking the fires of absence
Loss and anguish long departed
Adjust to changes re-arranging, burns in many ways

Pain burns in many ways

The feeling can't avoid you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paradise Lost's song Jaded are somewhat cryptic and may require deeper interpretation than what is immediately apparent. One possible interpretation is that the dissident establishment represents mainstream society, which is opaque and difficult to understand. The second line suggests that we all suffer because of this establishment, which serves to reinforce inequality and perpetuate the status quo. The third line speaks to the power of language to shape our understanding of reality. In particular, we are urged to "refill the porous shell with words that mean so many things." This could be interpreted as a call to use language to challenge the dominant narrative and create new ways of seeing the world.

The next verse talks about the feeling that "can't avoid you." This could be interpreted as a reference to the pervasive sense of unease that exists in society today. The line "stoking the fires of absence" could be seen as a metaphor for the way in which people are feeling increasingly disconnected from each other and the world around them. The following line about loss and anguish suggests that this sense of disconnection is something we have been struggling with for a long time. Finally, the line "adjust to changes re-arranging, burns in many ways" suggests that despite these challenges, we must find a way to adapt and re-imagine the world around us.

This song has one of the best guitar solos i've ever heard. Gregor Mackintosh is a very underrated guitarist.

Typical misconception: I like what the guitarist is playing, so he must be a great guitarist. But it is the composition that makes it great, not the playing. Greg is an awesome composer. And he gets praised for that. So he is not underrated. His playing is average.

@nehirsancar8371

@Okkvltify I meant to composer side of him by the "guitarist" word, but you're right, guitarist was a wrong choice of term for this. "Guitar composer" could be more appropriate maybe, but in the end, I still think that he is an underrated composer. He doesn't get enough reputation.
