Emergency
Paramore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think we have an emergency
I think we have an emergency

If you thought I'd leave then you were wrong
'Cause I won't stop holding on

So are you listening?
So are you watching me?

If you thought I'd leave then you were wrong
'Cause I won't stop holding on

This is an emergency
So are you listening?

And I can't pretend that I don't see this

It's really not your fault
That no one cares to talk about it
To talk about it

'Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserved to be alive

Alive

So you give up every chance you get
Just to feel new again

I think we have an emergency
I think we have an emergency

And you do your best to show me love
But you don't know what love is

So are you listening?
So are you watching me?

Well, I can't pretend that I don't see this

It's really not your fault
That no one cares to talk about it
To talk about it?

'Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserved to be alive

Alive

These scars, they will not fade away

No one cares to talk about it
To talk about it

'Cause I've seen love die
Way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
When it deserved to be alive

I've seen you cry
Way too many times
When you deserved to be alive

Alive

Overall Meaning

In "Emergency," Paramore sings about a tumultuous relationship that is in desperate need of saving. The lyrics express a sense of urgency and a desire to hold onto their love, despite the challenges they face. The opening lines of the chorus, "I think we have an emergency, if you thought I'd leave you then you were wrong, cause I won't stop holding on," set the tone for the song's message. The lyrics seem to indicate that the singer is resolute in their commitment to the relationship and will not let it falter.

The second verse is a plea to their partner to pay attention to the state of their relationship, "this is an emergency, so, are you listening? And I can't pretend that I don't see this.” The lyrics suggest that the singer feels neglected by their partner and wants them to take responsibility for the issues they face. They acknowledge that their relationship has problems but also assert that it is not entirely their fault.

The chorus is filled with emotional weight as the lyrics describe the singer's pain from seeing love and their partner suffer. These lines, "Cause I've seen love die way too many times when it deserved to be alive (It deserved to be alive), and I've seen you cry way too many times when you deserved to be alive, alive,” are particularly poignant as they describe the death of love and the sadness that comes with the loss of a relationship.

Overall, "Emergency" is a song that expresses the desire to save a relationship that is hanging by a thread. The lyrics are heartfelt and emotional, and they convey the sense of urgency of the situation.

The worst thing about the Paramore timeline is that the angry edgy emo days where the happiest... And the happy bubblegum colorful days are the saddest ever.
And I find that relatable, I miss being an angry emo teenager instead of a sad adult. I miss the 00's man!

@alliem1072

BATTIS94 Agreed. They had a different sound that I like better than the top 40 songs that followed....

I think the pinnacle for Paramore was their Riot album. It had the edgy angry lyrics and music whilst being super catchy. Brand new Eyes was more pop and rock and since then the band has moved towards pop music. Initially, Paramore was a collaboration between Josh Farro writing the edgy music and Hayley writing the lyrics however they broke up romantically between Riot and Brand New Eyes and the songs changed as he left the band. Their last album was so bad I didn't even purchase it. Paramore without Josh Farro just isn't the same.

@@almac9203 The Josh-Hayley combo was strong! And Riot is the first album that comes to mind when I think of Paramore. I do like Brand New Eyes though, but after that... It's a shame that they decided to go for a pop sound instead of keeping some edge in their music, cuz they had a nice balance going on.
