Forgiveness
Paramore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You hurt me bad this time, no coming back
And I cry 'til I couldn't cry, another heart attack
If I lay on the floor, maybe I'll wake up
And I don't pick up when you call
'Cause your voice is a gun
Every word is a bullet hole
Shot a hole in the sun
If I never look up maybe I'll never notice

And you, you want forgiveness
But I, I just can't do it yet

There's still a thread that runs from your body to mine
And you can't break what you don't see, an invisible line
If I follow it down would we just be alright?
But it could take me all your life to learn to love
How I thought I could love someone
I haven't even begun
If it's all up to us we might as well give up

And you, you want forgiveness
(I can barely hang on to myself)
But I, I can't give you that
(I can't give you, I can't give you that)
And you, you want forgiveness
(I'm afraid that I'll have nothing left)
But I, I just can't do it yet
(I can't do, I just can't do it yet)

Don't you go and get it twisted
Forgiving is not forgetting
Don't you go and get it twisted
Forgiving is not forgetting
No, it's not forgetting
No, I'll never forget it, no

And you, you want forgiveness
(I can barely hang on to myself)
But I, I can't give you that
(I can't give you, I can't give you that)
And you, you want forgiveness
(I'm afraid that I'll have nothing left)

But I, I just can't do it yet
(I can't do, I just can't do it yet)

Overall Meaning

The song Forgiveness, by Paramore, has a raw and emotional tone to it. The lyrics depict a relationship that has been severely damaged, and one person is trying to seek forgiveness from the other. The first stanza talks about how the singer has been hurt so much that she feels like she could die, and that she's trying to ignore the person who hurt her in order to heal. She uses powerful metaphors to describe how every word from the person's voice feels like a bullet wound, and how the pain is so intense that it feels like it could blot out the sun. She's afraid that if she looks up, she'll see just how far gone the relationship really is.

The second stanza uses the metaphor of a thread connecting two people to describe how the two are still connected. The singer wonders if following this invisible line will lead to forgiveness and healing, but realizes that learning to truly love someone takes a lot of time and effort. She's afraid that all the energy she's put into loving has been wasted, and that there's no hope left for the relationship. The chorus repeats twice, driving home the point that the singer just can't bring herself to forgive the person who hurt her. The final stanza reminds the listener that forgiving isn't forgetting, and that while some things can be forgiven, they can never be forgotten.

It’s called New Wave. Alot of great bands adopted this genre back in the day. It’s basically the second phase of alternative music. Bands that were famous for this genre were Blondie, The Police, The Cure, New Order and many other!

Loving all the contrast of sad, painful lyrics sung to a colorful music that they're going into. They're like "this is our past, it's part of us we carry it but we've learned from it and now we're headed to these hopefully better days of reconciliation and reconnection."
