Idle Worship
Paramore Lyrics

Standing here like I'm supposed to say something
Don't hold your breath, I never said I'd save you, honey
And I don't want your money
If I was you I'd run from me or
Rip me open you'll see you're not the only one who's hopeless
Be sure to put your faith in something more
I'm just a girl and you're not as alone as you feel
We all got problems, don't we?
We all need heroes, don't we?
But rest assured there's not a single person here who's worthy

La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Don't let me let you down

Hey, baby I'm not your superhuman
And if that's what you want
I hate to let you down
I got your hopes up
Now I got you hoping
That I'm gonna be the one that let you down

Oh, it's such a long and awful lonely fall
Down from this pedestal that you keep putting me on
What if I fall on my face?
What if I make a mistake?
If it's okay a little grace would be appreciated
Remember how we used to like ourselves?
What little light that's left, we need to keep it sacred
I know that you're afraid to let all the dark escape you
But we could let the light illuminate these hopeless places

La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Just let me let you down

Hey, baby I'm not your superhuman
And if that's what you want
I hate to let you down
I got your hopes up
Now I got you hoping
That I'm gonna be the one that let you down

La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la

Oh, no, I ain't your hero
You're wasting all your faith on me
Oh, no, I know where this goes
Think it's safe to say your savior doesn't look a thing like me

La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Don't let me let you down

Hey, baby I'm not your superhuman
And if that's what you want
I hate to let you down
I got your hopes up
Now I got you hoping
That I'm gonna be the one that let you down

Hey, baby I'm not your superhuman
And if that's what you want
I hate to let you down
I got your hopes up

Now I got you hoping
That I'm gonna be the one that let you down

Overall Meaning

The song Idle Worship by Paramore is a powerful commentary on the pressures and expectations that come with fame and success. Hayley Williams, the lead singer of Paramore, sings about how people put her on a pedestal, worshiping her as a hero who can save them from their problems. But she reminds the listener that she is just a person, not a superhero. She can't save anyone and doesn't want to be held responsible for their happiness. She warns them not to put their faith in her or in anyone else, but to find something more meaningful to believe in.

The lyrics of the song are full of contradictions and ambiguity. Williams sings about how she doesn't want to let people down, but at the same time, she acknowledges that she will inevitably disappoint them. She wrestles with her own insecurities and doubts, wondering if she can live up to the expectations of her fans. She also encourages the listener to accept their own flaws and imperfections and to find comfort in the fact that everyone has problems and no one is perfect.

Overall, Idle Worship is a powerful and honest portrayal of the struggles that come with fame and the pressure to be an inspiring figure to others. The lyrics are both heartfelt and relatable, speaking to anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by the expectations of others.

ok this song has to be about those fans that put musicians up on pedestals and say they saved them. like this is Haley quite literally saying "sorry to let you down, but i didn't save you. im not that great"

i mean,,,

"be sure to put your faith in something more. im just a girl and you're not as alone as you feel"

"it's such a long and awful lonely fall down from this pedestal you keep putting me on"

"what if i fall on my face what if i make a mistake"

"im not your superhuman"
"id hate to let you down"
"i ain't your hero"
"you're wasting all your faith on me"
"your savior doesn't look a thing like me"

come on you can't tell me this song isn't about that :P

I think the song is about the concept of how people tend to deumanize the celebrity. I love this song because I often think people don't realize that dehumanizing someone doesn't just mean thinking or acting as if that person is inferior, but it also happens when you think that person is superior; because putting someone on a pedestal is just a way to put it to another level from yours, is a way to refuse to feel empathy:

"what if i fall on my face what if i make a mistake"
celebrity is no longer perceived as human but as a product on which you reflect your dreams, so she can't afford to fall from that pedestal, otherwise It would break the divine illusion you wanted to create.

Then Hayley sings how beautiful it would be if people began to believe in the light that is in each of us as humans:

"Remember how we used to like ourselves? What little light that’s left, we need to keep it sacred, I know that you’re afraid to let all the dark escape ya, but we could let the light illuminate these hopeless places"
if we came back to believe in that light then we would no longer need to create a divine figure to cling to, because in that case it's just the humanity what unites us with the celebrity, and that makes us feel connected with her.

I love how in the verses her voice goes from sweet and nice in the beginnings and by the ends it changes to anger and almost sounding psychotic. Brilliant.
