Sunday Bloody Sunday
Paramore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
Tonight, we can be as one tonight

Broken bottles under children's feet
And bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

How long, how long must we sing this song?

How long, how long?

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die, yeah

I wipe the tears from your eyes
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your tears away
(Tonight, tonight)
I wipe your bloodshot eyes
(Tonight, tonight)

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday
(The real battle just begun)
Sunday, bloody Sunday
(To claim the victory Jesus won on...)

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paramore's version of Sunday Bloody Sunday are quite straightforward, and are a cover of the original song by U2. The song tackles the issue of war, violence and the destruction that it leaves behind. The first verse sees the singer expressing their disbelief in the news they have heard and their inability to ignore it. The second verse talks about the broken bottles under children's feet, a clear allusion to the aftermath of riots and battles. The singer refuses to take part in the battle, however, as it goes against their values and principles.

The chorus, "Sunday, bloody Sunday", is a direct reference to the Bloody Sunday incident that happened in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1972. On that day, British soldiers opened fire on a peaceful civil rights march, killing 14 people and injuring many others. The song acts as a call for peace, unity, and an end to the violence that has become so prevalent.

The third verse highlights the divide between those who are immune to the effects of the violence, and those who suffer from it. The "fact is fiction and TV reality" line is a comment on how the true effects of violence are often sanitized and hidden away from the public. The final verse sees the singer wiping away someone's tears, possibly a loved one who has been affected by the violence.

Overall, the song is a powerful commentary on war and violence and encourages people to stand up against it and seek peace instead.

I'm from India and I loooove this version.  U2 opened with this song IN Mumbai cause Christians are being killed/beaten in India. Please give to CHristian orphanages in India:so many little Christian children lost parents cause they were murdered. If you're British, your 300 years of Indian colonization gave Christians a bad name in India(I forgive u). Marco Polo saw Christian communities in India 500 years before Europe colonized us. So Christians in India were able to live peacefully for almost 2000 years but can't anymore thanks to European colonization making Christianity India's false enemy.  And Im Indo-Christian!

The Bible's Christian New Testament  was partly written by a lady saint named Priscilla!  The New Testament says that there is complete human unity/equality across gender, race, and social status: Christ says:" There is no Jew or Greek(division among races), servant or freeman, male or female. All are One in (me) Christ ." Sunday Bloody Sunday refers to these words in : " Cos tonight we can be as One."

SBS ends with the words:  "To claim the victory that Jesus won."

This victory is over death... claimed by simply trusting in Jesus to save your soul

I'll see my dead 7 year old sister and murdered uncle in heaven one sweet day. I hope to see you sweet people too!_(btw, many of the greatest scientists were deeply religious Christians such as James Clerk Maxwell, Gregor Mendel, Juan Maldacena. Englishman Michael Faraday, the Wright Brothers[invented the airplane], even many of the Apollo astronauts. _There is a Red Bible on the moon still to this day.)

Sir Isaac Newton, discoverer of gravity and the Calculus, said Jesus Christ(the Prince of Peace) will return to earth in 2060... but no one can really know  the exact day or the hour.

Your Momma

Wolfy Kaname I agree but I think it's the effort she puts into this song that just makes it beautiful

Paramore really does this song justice. Good on ya, Hayley. Good on ya.

Never Letter Perfect

Pretty much perfect. She sings it with skill right? The tone is right, the lyrics spoken clearly. So what if the original is better? She worked hard on this. And god damn she did good.
