Told You So
Paramore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For all I know
The best is over and the worst is yet to come
Is it enough?
To keep on hoping when the rest have given up?
And they go

I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me so
I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me

Say they, say they told me
Say they, say they told me
Well you say, you say you told me

I know you like
When I admit that I was wrong and you were right
At least I try
To keep my cool when I am thrown into a fire
And they go

I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me so
I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me

Say they, say they told me
Say they, say they told me
Well you say, you say you told me

Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again

Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again
Throw me into the fire
Throw me in, pull me out again

I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me so
I hate to say I told you so
But they love to say they told me

(Throw me into the fire, throw me in)
Say they, say they told me
(Throw me into the fire, throw me in)
Say they, say they told me
(Throw me into the fire, throw me in)
Well you say, you say you told me

(Say you told me so)

(Say you told me)
(Told you so)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paramore's "Told You So" express frustration at the lack of optimism and hope in society. The song begins with a feeling of uncertainty, wondering if the future holds only disappointment. Lead singer Hayley Williams sings, "For all I know, the best is over and the worst is yet to come." Despite this ominous feeling, she wonders if it's enough to keep hoping when others have given up.

As the song progresses, Williams turns her attention to the people around her who love to tell her when she is wrong. Through the chorus, she expresses a sense of frustration with these people, singing, "I hate to say I told you so, but they love to say they told me so." She resents their gloating and their lack of understanding, and wonders if it's worth trying to keep her cool in the face of their accusations.

The song's refrain repeats the idea of being thrown into a fire and pulled out again, almost as if Williams is trying to prove herself by enduring hardship. Despite the difficulties she faces, she still resists the negativity around her and clings to hope. The song speaks to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

@CrowwreakStevenson

This almost seems like the album they were afraid to make last time because it would be too drastic of a change, but this is absolutely fantastic.

Jordan Payne i think this is really great and good to hear. I agree about the drastic change but what they have done is really nice i think. Many people seem like it a lot.

Honestly, just because it's pop doesn't make it generic or formulaic. They used original riffs and non-linear beats on this album, it's insanely creative and new. Stop complaining and enjoy the wonder they've done.
