@Rajin K R if he is going to do lot of different things with his vehicle ., some daily commute and some farm use and some long trip, some overlanding then as a jack of all trades I would suggest Thar.

If he’s going to do only farm use ., only overlanding or only off-road driving as a master of one I’ll suggest the Gurkha

If he needs to carry a Swiss Army knife in his pocket , choose the Thar.

If he’s taking a sledgehammer to bring down a wall, choose the Gurkha.

Thar is flexible and already well rounded product. Can do many things nicely. Jack of All trades. Best for doing different things. Advantage : Brand, Powertrain, Articulation, Interiors.

The gurkha is a raw blank canvas with lot of potential to be built into one particular role. Once that is done, it would be the master in that role., can’t beat it at its specialised game. Advantage : Space, capacity, Ride quality and Manual Diff locks

I would say that Gurkha 5 door with 4x4 (unlike the previous explorer) would be the closest and most affordable and the most realistic off roader we can think of as of now. It would be exciting if TATA or some new company like the Ineos tries to build a 4x4 from scratch - but that sounds like fairy tale and considering Ineos is the only company to do such a thing in the last few decades - it would be too much to even hope for someone doing the same in India.

I also feel sad that even if Ineos does plan to launch in India - it would only be affordable by the super rich. Add in the custom duties and import tax and we're now paying in crores

A properly built up 5door Xtreme Gurkha developed as a separate project by a fresh team with a fresh outlook tailor made to solve customer requirements would be the closest answer.

Horses for Courses. IFS has come a long way and definitely give a tough fight to solid fronts offroad. On road , the IFS will run circles around solid because it is set up in a way that fundamentally isolates the left and right. The handling and ride will be better with IFS but The front solid axle ‘s advantage is in its 1) Articulation 2) Robustness and Repairability - Which makes it unbeatable on an off-road biased system work horse especially over rock, the solid axle has the last word. I have a video in this channel where I explain how SFA trumps over IFS . Check it out - it’s called (Wheel Alignment )

Solid front axles needn't be uncomfortable. Range Rover classic, Jeep Grandcherokee ZJ, Discovery 1,2, G class w463 1995-2017 all had good ride quality.

Force could have retained the front solid axle, in made to order version, along with the IFS Gurkha. Giving people a choice is good marketing imho. Credit to M&M for offering the Thar in all conceivable formats. Force could have dominated the extreme bad road space with an extreme version. They deserted that space.

Off topic - With limited service centres it’s all the more important for Force to deliver absolutely niggle free vehicles right from the factory or it will get punished. It’s 2023, Force Motors !

What Mr. Ratcliffe did was basically give a giant middle finger salute to LR (though in a non crude way) and show that a basic 4x4 still has market. But being a completely new company, people with actual need for a 4x4 workhorse probably wouldn't invest their hard earned money in it, well atleast not enough people to have the company running. The only way was to make a capable, rugged 4x4 with reasonable luxury for enthusiasts with money to spare, to put down the money on it. I don't know their product strategy, but I believe they may be opting for a top down approach. May be there will be a fairly bare bones version of it down the line. Grenadier is a niche product and like all niche product, sadly it comes at a price.

Coming back to the Indian Version of Grenadier, well I don't think it will ever happen. The 4x4 community in India is very very tiny compared to the most parts of the world. IMO the whole 4x4/overlanding scene has recently picked up mostly cuz its trending on social media (FOMO kinds may be?) and not because of true 4x4 enthusiasts (4x4 as a sport, travel as a genuine hobby, not just to fill in insta/youtube/FB pages) This is not necessarily a bad thing as its gave us atleast 3 lifestyle 4x4 trucks, but you get my point. There are a million hurdles in getting such product into our market. Then there is the blanket ban on any sort of mods, so customizing it will immediately make it illegal. Besides Indian businessmen in general are very calculative of ROI, even if they do make a global product the returns could be too bleak and hence investing so much is very unlikely. Also unlike abroad where in most families there have atleast 2 vehicles( one for each partner or kids), In India, family comes first and its mostly one vehicle per family(if at all) and that has to do everything. So even if its an enthusiast, they most probably wont be able to pick one up(atleast a new one) cuz of family obligations. Hence finding fewer takers.

BUT, if it all there should be one, I think Force should be able to do it cuz regardless of low demand they have continued making the Gurkha for well over a decade now. But for a special product, just like Grenadier, it should be a summation of parts from different manufacturers. While Force cabin can provide a spacious shell even in SWB form, Tata can design the interiors. The engine, MT/AT gearboxes could be sourced from Mahindra. Force could provide the 4x4 hardware, including solid axles with good articulation . Suspension tuning could be done by Mahindra. Spare parts should be available through MS service network. Minimum electronics, no fancy touchscreen/connected tech. Simple analog dials, a decent music system. Just like the Gurkha, the vehicle should be homologated with all necessary accessories and like Grenadier, they should throw in the Winch as company accessory too. What do you think?

An unprecedented Indian Auto Syndicate like the one you mentioned is what it would take to pull this off with each party playing to its strength. Exciting proposition however unlikely to see this scale of multi faceted cooperation. IMHO One principal can seek expertise from OEMs of these carmaker’s and pull this off successfully.

The Indian 4WD community is indeed small compared to say Aus, US and you’re right the social media wave has kindled a new breed of 4wd AWD capable vehicle owners. This uptick is what keeps the business coffers clinging and thankfully the trend has made the business plan viable for 4x4 to exist in India as I brought out in the 📊.

But the trend over the last 3 years shows a healthy growth in the segment and I see it only growing steadily but slowly. There is more acceptance towards the idea of even in at least the form of soft roaders using electronics assisted traction control. As I said, the arrival of the Jimny would definitely further democratise it - because it could plug the one car garage criteria you brought out- and still do a bit of weekend fun. I agree with you that the Indian market wouldn’t be sustainable for a niche product . Exactly why I propositioned this as an export model. That changes the economies of scale in favour of the development and leveraging labour and production here , can actually put out an accessible 4WD workhorse for real users around the globe using existing distribution networks. Tata Mahindra and Force already export models abroad. The only effort I see which needs investment is adaptation R&D to make the product truly world class and versatile and also 🆙ping the Qc Game as I mentioned to establish brand reliance.
Development of a scratch platform would be prohibitively expensive and that’s where the existing GUrkha lends itself well to such experiments. Once these are sorted and an export worthy work horse at a competitive and accessible price point is established , it comes down to an aggressive marketing narrative to grab eyeballs. We are looking at the inviting large untapped base of the Grenadier pyramid not being serviced presently due to cost barrier.

@tripaccino Going a bit off topic here, If you have seen the Urbania, to my eyes, the quality fit and finish looks much more superior to the one offered in present gen Gurkha, which means they clearly can do better. This gives me hope that Gurkha's panel gaps, fit and finish (which in no way are a deal breaker) can be improved quite a bit without any hassles, making it acceptable to a wider customer base.

Unlike in US, here an individual can't (atleast not legally anymore) mix and match parts from different vehicles(like a mentioned above) to make one good vehicle. Companies don't sell crate motors unless its an insurance claim and that too its directly shipped to the Authorized dealer. The reason why I bring this up is, if this was legal, a lot more companies/like minded enthusiasts would do R&D to improve existing products and I am sure true enthusiasts would line up at such facilities.

What an Indian version of Grenadier then needs to be is, offer similar capabilities at a friendlier price point (we rule at cost engineering). Then it could potentially carve out a niche for itself even at a global stage. But the biggest hurdle here is the R&D to meet much more stringent safety regulations. It takes years! And then there is the guillotine called emissions norms, the heavy blade hanging by a thread, ready to chop off head of ICE engines as we know it. This further narrows down the scope of such a vehicle. EVs and hybrids will drive up the price considerably without offering much in return. Is it impossible? Hell, no! Its doable but it will be a herculean task to get a logical Indian cash vault to invest in something this radical and see it through.

Portal axles are something I’m exploring for Long term. But they have to be developed specifically for the Gurkha. massive clearance giving Portals are Complex and type engineered and supreme off-road but would be difficult to suit on road . Steering will also require to be rebuilt to avoid oversteer- for this present application of Indian defender rigid lives should be ideal: my First target is suspension upgrade followed then by drivetrain later.

From an articulation and maintenance simplicity perspective offroad., beams sprung on coils is the best choice. A conversion is possible and has been ✅ done on the old Thar. The flip side is that the modern gains of an IFS especially on road manners are traded out of the window. Is the cost and effort worth it is a question that depends on individual use case.

I’m working on a better off-road spec suspension upgrade on IFS itself. Subscribe and stay tuned for that results in the near future 🙌

Aaah! A boulderer finally! 🧗‍♂️🪨 Rock crawlers are such a rare breed in India. Have seen lot of trail and rally and sand action even, yet to see a group doing gnarly bouldering. If rocks is your thing then it has to be live beams front and rear with clean nice lifted body. It can be done, probably in less than 2 lakhs. Terratigers Chennai (Arka - find them on Instagram ) have done a conversion previously.

The problem is not IFS, the problem is poorly designed IFS systems nowadays. Gurkha is the perfect example of how bad an IFS design can be. Even BAHA prerunners and HMMWV's use IFS and they're bloody capable offroad. A solidly designed IFS with long arms will do wonders offroad. Montero is a good example.

But this is exactly why I said this is not an IFS Vs SFA debate, and put the Baja in the video while saying that line😸 The point is we don’t have a solid axle choice even if we wanted to. It took a billion dollars to create one from scratch in the form of the Grenadier.
Anyway modern IFS really shine through in sand and trail . Rock

Yes perhaps. But before the blame, I would also thank TATA for buying out a dying Jaguar-Land Rover from Ford. Retro sedans XJ and XK were killing the company and luxury SUVs were the only way to sway the business upwards. As much as I brood over the death of the Defender, I well understand the move was ‘necessary evil’ .Without Tata, there would be no JLR today.

2020-2021- 45000 units.

@Aravind Nayak tata has no influence on products of jlr though. It means that tata only gives them a platform and money to finance the production if needed and then get returns on sales. What to make,when to make,design,engine everything is decided by jlr in britain itself only. Tata benefits more from jlr than jlr does from tata except it revived the brand. Jlr has a huge presence in china and due to that tata enjoys great market valuations.
