Horizons
Parkway Drive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So it begins
Our eyes torn open
Free from the thoughts of doubt
Free from our selfish confines
our blood
Restless, ceaseless

With open arms we stand before the dawn

The sun seems to have been rising
Ever since I can recall
lending a sense of permanence
To this lying world

Your words not worth the air
Your life???s not worth its weight in flesh
To hope for something more
To dream of substance

Like a million before us
Waiting to die
Like a billion before us
Waiting to die

Masochistic
Don???t think this won???t be remembered Would be remembered
Sadistic
Perpetuation of stagnation

There is nothing as empty
As waiting to die
We spend our lives wasting as time eats us alive

The sun seems to have been falling ever since I can recall
The only sense of permanence
In this dying world

Sit back and watch as time eats us alive

Everyone who knew me(knew me)
Destined to die(die)
The marks I've left
Upon this world
Will wash away
In time
In time

And so it ends
In time
It all finds an end
In time
And so it ends
In time
We all find an end

With broken arms
And hollow eyes
I???ll wait our return
To oblivion

Embrace our last
Empty
Horizons

Embrace our last empty

Horizons x5

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Parkway Drive's song Horizons are quite melancholic, with themes of death and the passage of time being explored. The first verse describes a liberation of sorts, where the singer feels free from doubt and selfishness. It suggests a sort of rebirth or renewal. However, despite this sense of newness, the rest of the song is tinged with a sense of dread and hopelessness. The sun "rising" and "falling" represents the cycle of life and death, and the "sense of permanence" it lends to a "lying world" indicates that even as things change, they always stay the same. The chorus continues to drive home this theme of futility, with lines like "there is nothing as empty as waiting to die" and "we spend our lives wasting as time eats us alive."

The second verse takes on a more confrontational tone, with the singer calling out those who have let him down as worthless. The repetition of "waiting to die" and the lines about "perpetuation of stagnation" suggest a sense of being stuck, of being unable to move forward. The bridge of the song is particularly haunting, with the lines "Everyone who knew me / Destined to die / The marks I've left upon this world / Will wash away in time" indicating that even our legacies are fleeting.

The final stanza of the song is particularly poignant, with the singer resigned to the fact that everything and everyone will eventually come to an end. The "broken arms and hollow eyes" suggest weariness and exhaustion, but the line "embrace our last empty horizons" indicates a sort of acceptance, a willingness to face what comes next.

@rudraxhitman

Also, since this is my favorite current metalcore album, it's virtually impossible to order the songs on it from best-to-worst (when the "worst" song rates a 8.0/10 and the best a 9.6), but I will try anyways:
1. The Sirens' Song (9.6): Frenzied shred => IMMENSE groove, brilliant chorus, delicious percussive bass line and solo
2. Boneyards (9.5): Hectic beginning converges in a skull-crushing rhythm; great chorus; a SECOND breakdown; killer outro
3. Horizons (9.4): BEAUTIFUL acoustic intro; first distorted riff good, 2nd damn good, driving chug rhythm; SEXIEST outro
4. Breaking Point (9.4): WOW, from the soaring sweep-picking to the solo, chord reverb & breakdown phrases, near flawless
5. Carrion (9.1): Heard this live in concert! Amazing riffs throughout; great chorus; transition into 8:35's HEAVY is seamless
6. Five Months (8.9): OK opening riff develops into a steady chug with overlaid reverb; peaceful interlude; FANTASTIC solo
7. Idols and Anchors (8.8): AMAZING opening riffs; reverb on chorus and tapping is SICK; loses steam despite cool solo
8. Dead Man's Chest (8.6): Such a promising beginning with sick, bone-breaking riff, but fades into slight repetitiveness
9. Frostbite (8.4): Good song no doubt, but somewhat tame despite a nice double-bass, tapped middle part
10. Begin (8.4): Great opener for the album with trademark PWD riff and drumrolls; really short though
11. Moments in Oblivion (8.2): Rather unmemorable in the context of the album, individually solid though, esp. the 1st half
12. Feed Them to the Pigs (8.0): Solid start, past the intro the riffs are unspectacular, but the chord line is powerful
