The River
Parkway Drive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Follow your heart to the water
Fill your pockets with stone
Throw your arms around me
Never let me go

You were the first, you wouldn't be the last
What the river took, we could never replace
And as the pain set in so did the realisation
You were never coming home
For nights we lay awake
Wishing for answers, hoping against all hope
And if love could change the course of fate
These nights, we move mountains
But as the news filtered down the line, the impact shook us
Shook us to the core
Loss struck like a dagger in our aching hearts

Follow your heart to the water
Fill your pockets with stone
Throw your arms around me
Never let me go

It's not the years in your life, it's the life in your years

Old soul, so it's said
The day we lost is the day I found regret
Now in the waters that embraced you
But in the wake your absence left

Sink into me

Hold out your hands, sink into me
Hold out your hands, I'll take you away
Hold out your hands, surrender the weight of this world

Follow your heart to the water
Fill your pockets with stone
Throw your arms around me
Never let me go

Never let me go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Parkway Drive's song "The River" deal with the themes of love and loss. The first verse sets the somber tone with the instructions to "follow your heart to the water, fill your pockets with stone, throw your arms around me, never let me go." The second verse alludes to someone being lost in the river and the pain caused by this loss. The lyrics reflect on the sleepless nights spent searching for answers and hoping against hope, despite the eventual realization that the loved one was never coming home. The song mentions that while love can move mountains, it cannot change the course of fate.

The chorus is repeated throughout the song, driving the point of the pain that comes with loss. The bridge alludes to the soul of the lost loved one being an "old soul" and the regret felt by those who didn't appreciate their loved one until they were gone. The final lines reflect on the need to "sink into me" and "surrender the weight of this world."

This song never fails to make me cry, two years ago this February i lost my aunt and uncle (age 26 and 29) in an accident caused by a drunk driver. The phrase "its not the years in your life, but the life in your years" is truly beautiful. Please always have a designated driver and drive safe guys, you never know if your fun night out with friends will rob someone else of something irreplaceable.
