Bell Jar
Passafire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can only tell a lie for so long
Until you start believing every word you say
How many days can you prolong
The sand in the glass, it dwindles away
Broken transmissions, not enough information
Once a condition, now a realization

Keep on telling yourself it's true
Keep on telling your self it's not you
Keep on on telling yourself it's not true
Keep on telling yourself it's you

Eyes can be fooled only so long
With repetition of fiction
Eyes can be fooled only so long
Your definitions are fiction

Keep on telling yourself it's true
Keep on telling your self it's not you
Keep on on telling yourself it's not true
Keep on telling yourself it's you

Ears tend to bend only so far
Whatever gets some attention

Delusion spilled from the bell jar
It's circumvention of tension

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Passafire's song Bell Jar speak of the consequences of lying and how it can eventually lead to self-deception. The first two lines talk about how it is possible to lie for a certain period but eventually believing those lies becomes unavoidable. The next lines suggest that there's only a limited number of days one can prolong lying as time passes and it will eventually catch up. The following lines, "Broken transmissions, not enough information/ Once a condition, now a realization," imply that lying is like a broken transmission, it lacks the necessary information to be true. And after a while, one recognizes the lies as the result of lying becomes clear.

The chorus repeats four lines in different order, emphasizing the importance of self-deception as a part of our lying process. The next verse begins with "Eyes can be fooled only so long/With repetition of fiction." This means that even though one might deceive others with their lies, the truth eventually surfaces as it is difficult to keep up with those lies. The verse continues to say, "Your definitions are fiction," meaning that the liar's perception of the truth is false. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing the importance of self-deception in this process. Lastly, the last lines of the song suggest that when one is in a state of delusion, it becomes a circumvention of the tension or a way to escape reality.

Why am I not surprised. What a sad world we live in where half the population is so weak minded and sad with its life that they need to be stoned out of reality most of the time.

Yikes, I think sir rorschach has some repressed issues that need examining. No one can be that unhappy or unaware. This song is all about reflection, and drugs can definitely help you along that path if life's beaten you down. Not a fix but can certainly open you up to avenues that breed change. Crazy how hateful some people are.
