Circles
Passenger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been years
Since we carved our names
On a clocktower door
Before everything changed
We were big eyed boys
With the salt on our skin
And we'd throw our kites to the wind
And they'd fly on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on
On and on and on and on

It's been years
Since we whispered soft
With the torch light on
And the big light off
We were tired boys
With the soap on our skin
And we'd fall asleep to the wind

And we'd dream on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on
On and on and on and on

'Cause we're circles
We're circles you see
We go round round the sun
In and out like the sea
I'll circle round you
You will circle round me

And in years
When the torch light thins
And the clock tower's gone
And the big light dims
We'll no longer be boys

We'll have lines on our skin
And they'll throw our dust to the wind

Overall Meaning

The song "Circles" by Passenger is a reflective track that speaks about the passage of time and the inevitable changes that come with growing up. The lyrics reminisce about memories from the past and the people we once were before everything changed. The song starts off by introducing the concept of time passing with the opening line "It's been years, since we carved our names on a clocktower door". This line sets the tone of the song and creates a nostalgic feeling of something that has been left behind. The reference to the "clocktower door" signifies the marking of time and the importance of memories.

As the song progresses, it speaks about the carefree days of childhood where everything seemed possible. The lyrics, "We were big-eyed boys with the salt on our skin and we'd throw our kites to the wind" conjure up images of a group of friends playing and enjoying life without any worries. The use of the repetitive refrain "On and on and on and on" highlights the feeling of endlessness that comes with youth and how time seems to stretch out before you.

As the song moves into the second verse, the lyrics continue to focus on the idea of transformation and how we change as we age. The line "We were tired boys with the soap on our skin, and we'd fall asleep to the wind" speaks about the end of a day and how comforting it is to rest and let go of the worries of the world. The repetition of the refrain drives home the idea of how time moves in circles and how we come back to the same place despite moving forward.

The chorus is a central aspect of the song, with the repetition of the line "We're circles, we're circles you see" emphasizing the cyclical nature of time. The use of imagery, "We go round round the sun in and out like the sea", creates a sense of motion and fluidity that complements the notion of time as an ever-changing force. The lyrics, "I'll circle round you, you will circle round me" speaks to the idea of relationships and how people come in and out of each other's lives in a circular motion.

Finally, the song ends on a reflective note with the lyrics, "We'll no longer be boys, we'll have lines on our skin and they'll throw our dust to the wind". This line is a stark reminder of the fact that time is constantly moving forward, and we must cherish the moments we have while we still have them.

Overall, "Circles" is a poignant reflection on time and the inevitability of change. The use of vivid imagery and repetitive refrains creates a sense of nostalgia and longing, making it a powerful and emotional track.

I met Mike on a street corner in 2008, when he still had a band and was singing without a microphone. Had his CDs on a table and maybe a crowd of fifteen people watching. He was 24 back then. When I listened to him, I felt like he had the soul of a really old man who has seen so much hardship and sadness, and experienced so much of life, even though he was so young. He felt tired, resigned. And when I hear this, six years later, I feel the same way. He seems wise beyond his years. Keep going Mike, I hope the fame and fortune won't change anything, and that you'll keep making brilliant music like this.

I Remember When My Mother First Showed Me This Album. I Was About 5 Years Old And Ever Since I Have Never Been Able To Get Over It. When Ever Someone Asks Me What My Favourite Song Is, I Say: "It Matters Not What Song, But What Album."

Old age and hardships don’t always go hand in hand. I’ve never met him, but I’ve thought the precise same thing by hearing some of his songs. I don’t know what he’s been through, but if there’s any truth behind these songs of his, I can only hope that they’ve made him stronger, wiser, and ultimately closer to God.

I saw him live tonight, and when he sang this... the emotion in his voice was so goddamn real, I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Passenger, thank you.
