Golden Leaves
Passenger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember how this first begun?
Teeth were white and our skin was young
Eyes as bright as the Spanish Sun
We had nothing we could hide

Now my dear we are two golden leaves
Clinging desperately to winter trees
Got up here like a pair of thieves
While the sirens blare outside

What's left to say when every word's been spoken?
What's left to see when our eyes won't open?
What's left to do when we've lost all hope and
What's left to break when our hearts are broken?
But sometimes

Do you remember how this started out?
So full of hope and now we're filled with doubt
A dirty joke we used to laugh about
But it's not funny anymore

I fear I choke unless I spit it out
Still smell of smoke, although the fire's gone out
Can't live with you, but I die without

So what's left to say when every word's been spoken?
What's left to see when our eyes won't open?
What's left to do when we've lost all hope and
What's left to break when our hearts are broken?
But sometimes

So what's left to say when every word's been spoken?
What's left to see when our eyes won't open?
What's left to do when we've lost all hope and

What's left to break when our hearts are broken?
But sometimes

Overall Meaning

The song "Golden Leaves" by Passenger is a melancholic and introspective song about a relationship that has gone sour over time. The lyrics paint a picture of a love that was once passionate and bright, but has now faded into doubt, regret, and sadness. The opening lines suggest a time when things were once carefree and full of hope, but have now given way to a sense of resignation and loss. The metaphor of "two golden leaves clinging desperately to winter trees" is a powerful one, evoking the idea of a love that has outlived its season and must eventually fall away.

The song explores the complex emotions that come with the end of a relationship. The singer is torn between conflicting feelings of love, despair, and anger. He is unsure what to say or do, and is left feeling lost and adrift. The repetition of the chorus drives home the sense of helplessness and uncertainty, as if the singer is asking himself the same questions over and over again.

Ultimately, "Golden Leaves" is a poignant meditation on the nature of love and loss. The song captures the bittersweet feeling of looking back on a relationship that has ended, and the struggle to move on and let go of what once was.

Let Her Go was bound to be popular, but nothing special. Not like this. These lyrics are flawless, as well as the truly perfect strings. I love the raw, primitive nature of indie music, beautifully captured here. It's so human - we can feel his breath on our face, understand his words. They're not about sex, they're so much more meaningful. We can understand the changes in pitch, the free rhythm. This is my favourite work of Passenger's. I'm currently listening to his album in 24-bit lossless off HDtracks.

Whispers is the only album I can listen to anymore. Once you get a taste a great music you can't just throw it out the drain and go back to listening to My House. No. This song isn't about parties, it's about his experiences. Not his experiences at parties, experiences we can relate to. Like losing someone you cared about and cared about you. But you can't let go.. I've had an experience like that. I can relate to this song. And all of the others in Whispers. So thank you Passenger, or Mike. For producing amazing music.
