The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Passenger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I am the boy who cried wolf
And I know I've lied in the past
But last night I saw his yellow eyes shining in the dark
Yeah, I know I spun tales with his voice
And I open my mouth too fast
But last night I saw his footprints in the path

Well, I could swim every sea from south pole to north
But I know I'll only ever be the boy who cried wolf

Well, I am the shepherd's only son
And I know what a joke I've become
I have an honest heart but I have lies on my tongue
I don't know how it started or where it came from
And you have no reason and I have no proof
But this time I swear, I'm telling the truth
I saw that old wolf, from tail to tooth
And I know that he's hungry and he's coming down too

Well, I could swim every sea from south pole to north
And I could climb every tree and scale every course
And I could share only the truth from this day forth
But I know I'll only ever be the boy who cried wolf

Oh, oh, I am the boy who cried wolf
Oh, oh, I am the boy who cried

Overall Meaning

wolf

The song "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" by Passenger is about a person who has a reputation for lying in the past and is not believed when he actually speaks the truth. The lyrics begin with the singer admitting that he has lied in the past and that he knows people do not trust him anymore. However, he claims to have seen the wolf last night, and for the first time, he is telling the truth. He continues to explain that he has seen the signs of the wolf's presence - his yellow eyes shining in the dark and his footprints in the path.

The second verse reveals that the singer is the shepherd's son, and he has become a joke because of his habit of lying. Though he has an honest heart, he cannot control the lies that come out of his mouth. He does not know how it started or where it came from, but he swears that this time he is telling the truth. He has seen the wolf from tail to tooth, and it is hungry and coming down too. However, he fears that he will still only ever be the boy who cried wolf, even if he speaks only the truth from now on.

This song portrays the themes of betrayal, honesty, and reputation. The singer feels isolated and betrayed by people because they do not believe him. However, he also acknowledges his past mistakes and aims to make amends by telling the truth even though he knows he may not be believed. The song teaches the lesson that once a person loses trust, it is tough to regain it and that one must be mindful of their reputation and the consequences of their actions.

It makes me feel like.. like the "wolf" is a suicide in fact.. And the boy who cried wolf is actually a boy who talked about commiting suicide too much, too loudly, too jokingly and too many times before and at one point it isn't a joke for him anymore, not a matter of speech but a hard truth.. and he's so scared now because he actually sees the "wolf" he's been talking and talking so much before to get attention and now he knows nobody would take him seriously when the said wolf is at his door..

And it's especially this verse which makes me think it's a metaphore for what's mentioned above..

"You have no reason and I have no proof (...)
But this time I swear! I'm telling the truth !
I saw that old wolf from tail to tooth
And I know he's hungry and he's coming down too.."
