New York
Passenger and Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was Christmas Eve, babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me
"Won't see another one"
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you, baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas Day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old gallon drunk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy blaggard
Happy Christmas, you mug
I pray God it's our last

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas Day

I could have been someone
Well, so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me, babe
I kept them with my own
Can't make it alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas Day

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
On a one-horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
On a one-horse open sleigh

Dashing through the snow
On a one-horse open sleigh
Through the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight, hey

Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
On a one-horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way

Oh what fun it is to ride
On a one-horse open sleigh

Overall Meaning

The song "New York" by Passenger and Ed Sheeran takes the listener on a journey through the city grit and love. The song begins with the singer in a drunk tank on Christmas Eve, where an old man sings a song, "The Rare Old Mountain Dew" to him. The singer thinks of his lover, dreaming of being with her. He remembers meeting her for the first time on a cold Christmas Eve and her promise that Broadway was waiting for him. They dance through the night while Sinatra sings and the NYPD chorus sings "Galway Bay."

The song highlights the struggle of living in New York with lyrics, "They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold, but the wind goes right through you, it's no place for the old". However, the singer still has hope and sees a better future for himself and his lover. Towards the end of the song, the tone becomes bitter, as the singer speaks to a bum in the drunk tank and wishes it was their last Christmas together. He then remembers his dreams of becoming someone and how his lover took them away.

Overall, "New York" is a song about hope and despair, love and loss, and the gritty reality of life in the city.

Said Sinno

Well, I met him in Minnesota,
He was dark and overcast.
With long, grey hair and eyes that stared
Through me like I was glass.
I asked "Where are you going to?"
He said, "I'm the wind I'm just blowing through."
He lit up a cigarette and began to talk.

Said:
"The doctors told me that my body won't hold me,
My lungs are turning black.
Been a lucky strike's fool since I was at school and there ain't no turning back.
They can't tell me how long I've got,
Maybe months but maybe not,
So I'm taking this bike and riding to New York.

'Cause I wanna see my grand-daughter one last time,
Wanna hold her close and feel her tiny heartbeat next to mine.
Wanna see my son and the man he's become,
Tell him I'm sorry for the things I've done,
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Oh, I'm taking this bike and riding to New York

Through the forests of Wisconsin that I knew as a boy,
Past the sky line of Chicago,
Round the lakes of Illinois.
I lay my head in a motel bed where my back is sore and my eyes turn red,
Listen to the trucks roll past my door.
Through the fields of Ohio as the sunshine paints them gold.
I run just like a river runs, rapid, quick and cold.
And fly through Pennsylvania and the Jersey turnpike tolls.
And I won't stop 'till I get to New York.

'Cause I wanna see my grand-son one last time.
Wanna see his eyes sparkling and stare back into mine.
Now my time is shorter,
I wanna see my daughter,
Tell her I'm sorry for the things I taught her
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Oh, I'm taking this bike and riding to New York.

And I'd go up to the churchyard one last time,
Lay flowers down for the woman who gave me the best years of my life,
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Yeah, I'd do it if I had to walk.
I'm taking this bike and riding to New York."

During this song, the crowd in the theatre was completely silent, at Passengers request. It remains one of the most emotional moments I've ever experienced during a concert. The story of this man stuck with Passenger, and now with me as well because of this beautifully sad song that gets to me every time. Truly amazing what music can make you feel! <3

The same, he even turned his mic off when I saw him and sang it completely acoustically. One of the most mesmerising moments I’ve experienced

This song and every song he sings had giving me the courage to search for the son I gave up for adoption in 1986. I am forever grateful. God bless you
