midnight
Passengers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stepped out on a celluloid night
That flickered on a black and white reel
Looking for something that I could not explain
I could only feel
These were the songs upheld by the shades
That spoke to me as I left town
Israelites, The Harder they Come, 54-47*
I hear them now
And the words of the prophets never sounded
As good as the echo of a hard one drop
To be forever enslaved by a sound the creator
Made- don't let it stop

Come again, midnight passenger
There to accompany down
To the end of the souls tlost avenue
Feel it now

I kept walking in the dust all night
Looking for a diamond in the crush
Halfway under in bars like a shop that was going
Down-or coming up
It was not the sun that stung, but the feel of loss
And the voice of suffering and fate
Till I just stopped listening to the chatter of all
Those yesterdays- crime pays

We will show up with all our secret problems
And even if we can't find land
There's a tone written into soul songs

That understands
We will be free

Overall Meaning

Passengers, a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno, released the song "Midnight" in 1995, and it became a significant success. The song's lyrics express the singer's quest for something that he can only feel but cannot describe as he seeks musical solace in a foreign land. The song opens with the singer stepping out into what appears to be a movie set, a "celluloid night that flickered on a black and white reel," signaling the illusionary nature of his surroundings. He then hears songs like "Israelites," "54-47," and "The Harder they come," that spoke to him as he left town, and he recalls them now. The words of prophets never sounded as good as the echo of a hard one-drop. He then urges the listeners not to stop and reminds them that they may be forever enslaved by the sound made by the creator.

The singer then experiences the desert as he walks aimlessly, "looking for a diamond in the crush." He feels a sense of loss and hears the voice of suffering and fate until he stops listening to the chatter of yesterdays when he realizes that "crime pays." The song's final lines, "We will show up with all our secret problems, and even if we can't find land, there's a tone written into soul songs that understands, we will be free," suggest that the singer has found solace in music and that there is hope for the future regardless of past mistakes.

Avrebbe meritato più successo sta canzone... È stupenda !

Luca Battioli
