Swimming In The Flood
Passion Pit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My eyes have once again been proven wrong
Your clouds, your blanket and my pity song
Hovering on your front lawn
Carry on until it's gone

What can I do?
The river's overrun
We're swimming in a flood, you know?
I thought I felt your touch
But the water's rising up

Then I lie naked in a rampage
In the flesh, face to face with the onset
I forget everything that's ever made me
Rise again
Now slowly leave my memory

What can I do?
The river's overrun
We're swimming in a flood, you know?
I thought I felt your touch
But the water's rising up
Now all my lovers raise their cups

What can I do?
The river's overrun
We're swimming in a flood, you know?
I thought I felt your touch

But the water's rising up
Now all my lovers raise their cups

Overall Meaning

In "Swimming in the Flood", the singer expresses his struggle with a relationship - his eyes have been proven wrong and he's left with his pity song. The clouds and blankets are interpreted as a metaphor for the relationship, trapping him in a painful love that he can't escape. The chorus line "the river's overrun, we're swimming in a flood" speaks to the intensity of the relationship; he is drowning in the love that he can't control. The singer is trying to hold on to his love, faintly believing he felt the touch of his partner, but is ultimately succumbing to the rising tides.

In the second verse, the singer describes the aftermath of losing the relationship. He is left naked after the emotional storm, forgetful of anything that had mattered to him before - he has been physically stripped and emotionally concussed by the storm. He forgets everything that used to give him motivation and rise up from along with forgetting the touch of his partner. All of his lovers surround him, raising cups, perhaps to move on or drown out their shared pain. Overall, the song conveys the emotions of loss, confusion, and the struggle in moving on from something that is both destructive and all-consuming.

@AngryOranges

This will always feel like the start of covid-019 in 2020 for me, i went to a bar with some friends and we all talked about how stressed we were with how things were going and preparing for the unknown while this song was playing, it was the first time i ever heard it even though i knew passion pit. It really felt like it was about to be the apocalypse in early March. That's what i will always associate this song with.
