López, also known as "El Indio Pastor" (Pastor, The Indian), started out singing the Joropo musical style in a group with his brothers, but didn't gain more widespread notoriety until joining forces with fellow musician Nelson Henríquez. After two years performing in Nelson Henriquez's group (1972-1973) he decided to branch off and form his own: "Pastor López y su Combo." Many of the cumbias he has recorded are interpretations of works associated with "Peruvian cumbia", including "Cariñito sin mi", "Bonita y Mentirosa", and "Traicionera" among others. The success of his more than 30 year musical career has not been limited to his two nations of residence, Venezuela and Colombia, but spans the United States, Canada, Spain, the UK, and other countries with significant Colombian and Latino populations. He was one of the foremost recording stars for the dominantly cumbia record label Discos Fuentes.
The singer died on April 5, 2019, at the age of 74 years, at the North Clinic in the city of Cucuta, Colombia, after having suffered a stroke.

A la edad de cinco años, incluido por sus hermanos, comenzó a cantar y cuando tenía diez ya conformaba un grupo musical llamado "Los Hermanos López" Después ingresó al Combo de Nelson Henríquez, estableciendo varios éxitos como "Playa Colorá", "La Batea", "La arañita", y otros más.
Después de algún tiempo y a raíz de los grandes éxitos que Pastor tuvo en el Combo de Nelson Henríquez, decidió, en compañía de Tonal Gutiérrez, formar su propio grupo, bajo el sello discográfico "Disco Dark" de Venezuela.
Fué entonces en 1975 cuando Pastor López, Nelson Henríquez y Willie Quintero, armaron un grupo musical con sonido Colombiano, usando como base dos trompetas, piano, timbaleta y bajo. El éxito de este grupo no tardó en llegar y poco a poco lograron ingresar al mercado internacional con el pie derecho. Han sido grandes éxitos que el público no olvida y que han marcado la línea ascendente de este reconocido artista, ídolo principalmente en su tierra y en Colombia.
Es de reconocer que muy pocas agrupaciones se han podido dar el lujo que favorece a Pastor López y su combo de "mandar la parada" en la música bailable colombiana y ser los mayores vendedores de discos por más de 18 años.
