Metheny's musical contexts separate into many branches: the Pat Metheny Group plus various collaborations, duets, solo works, and other side projects.

He first made it big in the jazz world with the famous vibraphonist Gary Burton. Throughout the late 70's, 80's, and 90's, Metheny established himself as one of the leading jazz guitar players in the world. Famous for his tasteful midwestern style and tone, he also has an incredible facility with the guitar. His compositions have earned him acclaim in the jazz world as well.

He has played with such greats as: Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Bill Stewart, Brad Mehldau and Jaco Pastorius. Similar artists include Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, and John McLaughlin.

Pat Metheny has won 17 Grammy awards and holds the record for winning Grammys in the most categories.

After performing the entire album, straight through (impressive enough!), Pat then took the mic and went backwards, song-by-song, briefly offering his thoughts about each song, without a single moment of hesitation. 'Very impressive. What a mind.

Lyle Mays solo is just amazing. I wish it would just go on forever much like the rest of the song. The arrangement by Pat and Lyle is so damn good and I wouldn't have minded if it was another five minutes longer. A favorite of mine since I first heard it. And this version is my go to for this song. Live is always better.

Totally agree!!! This has been my most favorite song of all time...over the Beatles, Zepellin, all of the jazz greats, etc. This is such an uplifting, joyous piece of music and has that total 'trip factor' built in that Pat says he puts into every composition. I have seen him play it many times and it never gets worn out.

Pat Metheny is "The Master of Joyful Music!" This song is one of his masterpieces....my favorite. When I was brokenhearted because I lost everyone, I was determined to find my joy again, all by myself. This version grounded me in joy....proof that I could love myself when no one else cared. This piece, "Minuano", and "Finding and Believing" are my three favorite PM compositions. I would regard him as a musical genius based on those three pieces alone, but he has accomplished a universe of other achievements as well! I was lucky enough to meet Pat backstage in NYC at the Village Vanguard sometime around 2000 or so (I knew his then bass player Peter Washington from Grad school so he introduced me). I basically told him thank you so much for your amazing musical gifts to Humanity, and also that I think "Finding and Believing" is one of the greatest compositions of the 20th Century and that it really had a profound effect on me - he was pretty floored and so incredibly humble - what a class act. A true musical genius.

I have to say, as always with every musician pat has had in his group, that steve's bass playing over the years never ceases to amaze me even though bass isn't my instrument. He is hands down the most musical bass player i know of and when you listen to him what he does, it's mind blowing really. Insane musician ship.

Whenever I hear this beautiful piece of music, especially the beginning, I think eerie images of The Salem Massachusetts Witch Trials. Ironically, the first time I heard this was in a flawless performance at a Winter Colorguard International show. (used by the 1986 St. Anthony's Imperials from where?...Everett, Massachusetts) I absolutely love the time signature, the steady tension building throughout the song, and the full on crescendo release at the end...pure genius.

This is such an incredibly beautiful peice. Pat and Lyle are one of the greatest duo's of this century. Such incredible feeling and care for the composition. Its as if it were a child how they nurture the song or a wife how carefully they romance every phrase as if it were the last one they will ever play. It's not EASY to solo on this tune, but Lyle Mays totally killed it. Keep repeating and listenning to his solo like 10 times now

Every time I listen to Pat's music I am speachless in front of this perfection and I remain estatic enjoying every single note of this new miracle: thanks to exist Pat! And shall we speak also about Lyle? After listening to him, every pianist seems to be a beginner to me! ;o)

I saw the first Pat Metheny Group concert at a club in NYC called axis in Soho. . I met Pat methent last year in Morristown and he said they were nervous and almost did play San Lorenzo. They were incredible with Egan on Bass and Gotlieb on drums I was fortunate to see the full Cirvle tour also in Poerland Oregon. Full Circle is one of mt favorite compositions. These singers are great but the original singer from Argentina was the best.

This is Metheny's finest song, even better than "Are you going with me," which has Mays playing a harmonica sound with his right hand on a Korg while his left hand plays an Oberheim 8-voice and it has Pedro Arnaz singing his heart out. This one, however, is joyous and anthemic and makes one stand out and hug the entire audience as we all climb the mountain of sound. I played this at the end of a two-hour memorial for my mother, that's how much I love it....
