Fresh from a successful string of regional headline tour dates, they have also toured the UK with Keston Cobblers’ Club and recorded a live video session for ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris so far this year. They made their festival debut in 2012 at Festibelly, on the same line-up as acts including Bastille and We Were Evergreen and, having spent the latter part of 2013 touring the festival circuit (including Green Man, LeeFest, Standon Calling and London FolkFest ) they return this summer to make their debut at Cambridge Folk Festival in addition to Lyme Folk Weekend, Hop Farm, Larmer Tree, Wilderness and Green Man festivals.
They released their debut record The Boatswain’s Refuge EP in May 2013. Produced by BBC Folk Award nominee Ben Walker and recorded at the historic Crypt Studios in north London, the EP was released via Folkroom Records and radio highlights include BBC Radio 2 amongst others. They were also asked to record a song for For Folk’s Sake’s annual Christmas compilation in 2013 and their version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was championed by both BBC Radio 6 and Amazing Radio.

The River
Patch and the Giant Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Catch my breath to feel more alive
Will there ever be a time
To collect the pieces of my broken mind
Fall to broken knees
Gasp for air in stormy seas
To find a way out of the dark
Find a way for me to fix this broken heart
Is this our forever after?
In the eye of the hurricane
When you're lost in the shadows
When you feel the pouring rain
You can't escape the gallows
It just goes on and on
The black river flows
Are the lights on down the line
A place beyond this peak we climb
To weather through the storm
Somewhere down the stream regain my shape and form
Who will be there when I fall?
Will there be nothing left at all?
In the eye of the hurricane
When you're lost in the shadows
When you feel the pouring rain
You can't escape the gallows
It just goes on and on
The black river flows
In the eye of the hurricane
When you're lost in the shadows
When you feel the pouring rain
You can't escape the gallows
It just goes on and on
Will the light begin to fade
And leave me in the shadows
Will I ever see the day
Where I escape the gallows
Life goes on and on
The black river flows
The River by Patch and the Giant is a soul-stirring song that portrays the classic metaphorical river as a symbol for life's hardships and uncertainties, with the artists expressing their introspection on the battle of life. The opening lines "I wouldn't mind, Catch my breath to feel more alive" signify the state of exhaustion that one experiences, and the need to pause and collect oneself to move ahead. The recurring lines "In the eye of the hurricane, When you're lost in the shadows, When you feel the pouring rain, You can't escape the gallows" emphasize the feeling of helplessness when one is lost in the midst of chaos and difficulties, with no escape or hope in sight.
The emotional depths of the song reach their peak in the closing passage "Will the light begin to fade, And leave me in the shadows, Will I ever see the day, Where I escape the gallows, Life goes on and on, The black river flows." The line "Life goes on and on, The black river flows" serves as a reminder that, in spite of everything, life moves on, unpredictable and with its ups and downs. Though we might feel lost in the shadows and often encounter moments where we're sinking in the river's flow, we need to keep going to get through the storm and be able to weather what comes our way.
