Society
Pathetic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was cured alright
I was cured alright

Birth in the system
Haunted and oppressed
This is not an exit
By smashing butterfly
I'm alive
Or just exist?
Nothing compares
To feeling of needs

Such moral sadist
Repent to me
Cos this affection
Is temporary

I was cured alright
I was cured alright

Death in the system
Haunted and oppressed
This is not an exit
By smashing butterfly

I'm alive
You just exist
Nothing compares
To feeling of needs

Such moral sadist
Repent to me
Cos this affection
Is temporary

I was cured alright
I was cured alright

I was cured alright
I was cured alright

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Society" by Pathetic explore the theme of being trapped in a system that gives birth to individuals and then oppresses them. The first two lines, "Birth in the system, Haunted and oppressed" introduce the idea of entities being born in a system that is already flawed and works against their freedom. The following line, "This is not an exit, By smashing butterfly" suggests that they are not able to leave the oppressive system, even if it means destroying it.

The chorus, "I was cured alright, I was cured alright" serves as a juxtaposition to the rest of the lyrics. The word "cured" often implies healing, but in this context, it is more of a resignation to their fate within the system. The repetition of the phrase throughout the song reaffirms this idea that the individual has accepted their situation no matter how oppressive it is.

The verse continues with the questioning of the individual's existence, "I'm alive or just exist?" indicating that they are not sure if their existence is meaningful. The line "Nothing compares to feeling of needs" suggests that they are in constant search of something that will give their existence meaning, but are unable to find it within the system they are trapped in. The song ends with the repetition of “I was cured alright,” suggesting again that the system has won and that there is no escape from it.

this song really illustrates blind hatred, blind emotion, and little to no compassion. the calm times are ones you join the euphoria, and the chaotic ones is when you’ve been pushed out. Almost like a realization, or a plot twist when the hero has been helping the villian the entire time. It also make brain funky.
