Last Midnight
Patina Miller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the last midnight
It's the last wish
It's the last midnight
Soon it will be boom
Squish

Told a little lie
Stole a little gold
Broke a little vow
Did you?

Had to get your prince
Had to get your cow
Have to get your wish
Doesn't matter how
Anyway, it doesn't matter now

It's the last midnight
It's the boom
Splat
Nothing but a vast midnight
Everybody smashed flat

Nothing we can do
Not exactly true
We can always give her the boy

No?
No, of course, what really matters is the blame
Someone you can blame
Fine, if that's the thing you enjoy
Placing the blame
If that's the aim
Give me the blame
Just give me the boy

No

No
You're so nice
You're not good
You're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good
I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world

I'm the hitch
I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father
Like his son will be, too
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do

It's the last midnight
So goodbye, all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall

Here, you want a bean?
Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich
Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score
Oh well, you can blame another witch

It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse
I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours

All right, mother, when?
Lost the beans again
Punish me the way you did then
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch
And the gloom
And the doom

And the boom
Crunch

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Midnight" from the musical "Into the Woods" performed by Patina Miller depicts the moment of reckoning for the Witch character. It showcases her frustration and anger as she confronts the consequences of the lies, deceit, and manipulation that have taken place throughout the story.

In the first verse, she sings about the impending midnight, symbolizing the end of the line for her schemes. She reflects on the lies she told and the vows she broke, acknowledging that she will soon face the consequences. She also mentions the importance of acquiring the prince and the cow in her pursuit of her own wishes.

As the song progresses, the Witch reveals her cynicism and disillusionment with the world around her. She views everyone as liars and thieves, blaming them for their actions. She criticizes the idea of placing blame and emphasizes her own power as the witch. She asserts her role as the force that nobody believes in but that exists nonetheless.

In the later verses, the Witch offers beans to others, highlighting their potential for wealth and power. However, she also references the giants mentioned earlier in the story and uses them as a metaphor for the destruction and chaos that will arise. She then curses those around her before requesting to be separated from them, expressing her desire to be free from the doom and gloom that surrounds her.

The song "Last Midnight" explores the themes of accountability, consequences, and the disillusionment that can arise from deception. It reveals the Witch's inner turmoil and her desire to break free from the tangled web she has created.

I saw this, live and never before has there been a Witch I trusted so inherently. The way she plays the Witch, it's almost as if she is the true narrator. You sympathize with the other characters, but she is so human, so understandable, so bitter, so betrayed, so worn, so RIGHT. Her voice is so clear and her strength so inherent that she rings out like the canary in the mine. And by the time we get to this song, it truly is like, the voice of reason slipping away. Our last chance before doom. Boom Splat.

It's like if Vanessa Williams and Bernadette Peters had a child.
