Effortlessly combining folk, reggae, soul and blues, the singer/songwriter/guitarist , Patrice, exploded onto the music scene with his phenomenal testimonial debut Lions E.P in 1999 aged just 18. With the deep lyrical content and social conscience resonating within his work, Patrice alludes to his late father (a Sierra Leonian political activist and poet) and Bob Marley as the greatest influences on his music. Lions, with its tales of love and social rhetoric coupled with raw acoustic production, perfectly showcased Patrices distinctive fusion of lyrics, sounds and genres. After supporting Lauryn Hill on her much acclaimed Miseducation of Tour, Patrice released his critically acclaimed first album Ancient Spirits in 2000 (European sales in excess of 150,000)
Since 2001, Patrice has toured relentlessly and wooed audiences at gigs across Europe, USA and Africa. Whether solo, acoustic or with his band Shashamani, a big combination of humour, B-boy stage antics, and incredible musicianship have thus far made Patrices live shows a highlight of his career. Five years on, his reputation has been cemented with show stopping headline performances alongside Youssouf N'Dour in Senegal, Manu Chao and Damon Albarn at The Festival In The Desert and the Tamika Reggae Awards in New York amongst many others.
His second largely self produced album How Do You Call It (released in Europe September 2002) saw Patrice evolving his sound with a rich melange of Hip Hop, Soul and Reggae which underpinned twelve well crafted songs. Recorded over a two-month period in Jamaica and with 3 tracks produced in London with Cameron McVey, Massive Attack, Youssouf N'Dour, Andu Baraganescu and Neneh Cherry, How Do You Call It further cemented his unique niche in todays diverse musical landscape. The LP also spawned the Pan European hit Sunshine.
Nile, Patrice's third and most current album (named after the river Nile, representing Life in the African continent) is truly a bold undertaking and can be described as a work of astounding maturity, sincerity and sensitivity. Whether rocking to the amped guitar, explosive drums and African percussion behind Africanize Dem or soaking up the beautiful rendition of the obscure Wailers track It Hurts To Be Alone it's clear that experimentation has lent his work an undeniable urgency and freshness. The present single Soulstorm has provided Patrice with another European hit. The majority of 2005 was spent performing to sell out audiences throughout Europe which included his first headlined show for all the UK fans at The Borderline, in London, and perhaps the pinnacle of his career so far, playing in front of the 6,000 fans who filled out the Zenith in Paris. In the summer of 2006 Patrice released a live DVD which gives the audience an exclusive look at how Nile was recorded, rehearsed and performed throughout the world.

Yeah were free like the breeze um they couldn't fuck with Patrice
Yo the world is rotten from top to bottom the devil comes down
Yeah frequently to go soul shopping
What we know we have forgotten
It takes a second to kill what it took a generation to build
Well this will rise and this won't drop
And this will move and this won't stop
[Chorus ]
Look at my sneakers to judger me
I'll leave them speechless and dodgy
They say that niggaz too foxy
But they could never touch me
Look at my sneakers to judger me
I'll leave them speechless and dodgy
They say that niggas too foxy
But they could never touch me
Na na na nana na na na
Na na na nana na na na
Na nana na na naaaa.
The military didn't want me
They said I couldn't deal with authority
They guy took a look said I was a crook
Looked at my face looked at my waist
Looked at my shoes looked at my hat
Said that boy means trouble that boy is bad
They kicked me out of the boarding school 'cause be burned up mi room
The fire we mi a burn so big it did a kill dem wid the fumes!
When me at the club me they see me in VIP
Anywhere I go I need to bring my I.D
At my own gigs their messing with me
Just the other day I had a fight with my own security!
When I'm on the train they check up on me
When I'm on the plane they check up on me
When I'm at the border they dig up my laundry
They say I've got that look like I'm from the middle east
[Chorus]
Look at his sneakers to judge him he leaves them speechless and dodgy
They say that niggas too foxy but they could never get dodgy
Na na na nana na na na
Na na na nana na na na
Na nana na na naaaa.
They see that bling but I do my thing but the sound wing 'cause their shit sounds so
Thin
Now there in but trends change like the wind when I step up then judgment begins
I want to hear my echo from up town down to the ghetto
From Adis Ababa straight down to Soweto
Me say echo they say my lyric dem too dark so let me say them in
Falsetto
Me say who are you to tell me the fuck to tell me what to do
Coming out of the blue with your tie and your shoe
Me say who tell me tell me who the fuck are you
Instead of looking at my eyes you be looking at my shoes
[Chorus]
Na na na nana na na na
Na na na nana na na na

(Look at his sneakers to judge him he leaves them speechless and dodgy
They say thast niggas too foxy but they could never touch me)

(Look at my sneakers to judger me I'll leave them speechless and dodgy

Na nana na na naaaa.
The song "Sneakers" by Patrice is a commentary on the way people judge and stereotype others based on their appearances, specifically their footwear. Patrice asserts that what lives in one person lives in another, and that we should not judge each other based on surface-level appearances. The song starts with Patrice declaring that he is free like the breeze and that nobody can mess with him. He goes on to say that the world is rotten and that the devil frequently comes down to go soul shopping. Patrice believes that we have forgotten what we know and it is easier to kill something than to build it.
The second verse speaks to Patrice's personal experiences with being wrongly judged. He describes being kicked out of boarding school and having a fight with his own security at one of his gigs. He talks about people checking up on him while he is on the train, plane, or at the border. People always look at his shoes and his bling rather than his eyes, and this impacts the way they judge him. Patrice is frustrated with people who have no right to tell him what to do and who he is.
Overall, "Sneakers" by Patrice is a powerful commentary on the way people judge and stereotype others. Patrice encourages people to see others beyond their appearances and to recognize that who we are lives in each other.
