Effortlessly combining folk, reggae, soul and blues, the singer/songwriter/guitarist , Patrice, exploded onto the music scene with his phenomenal testimonial debut Lions E.P in 1999 aged just 18. With the deep lyrical content and social conscience resonating within his work, Patrice alludes to his late father (a Sierra Leonian political activist and poet) and Bob Marley as the greatest influences on his music. Lions, with its tales of love and social rhetoric coupled with raw acoustic production, perfectly showcased Patrices distinctive fusion of lyrics, sounds and genres. After supporting Lauryn Hill on her much acclaimed Miseducation of Tour, Patrice released his critically acclaimed first album Ancient Spirits in 2000 (European sales in excess of 150,000)
Since 2001, Patrice has toured relentlessly and wooed audiences at gigs across Europe, USA and Africa. Whether solo, acoustic or with his band Shashamani, a big combination of humour, B-boy stage antics, and incredible musicianship have thus far made Patrices live shows a highlight of his career. Five years on, his reputation has been cemented with show stopping headline performances alongside Youssouf N'Dour in Senegal, Manu Chao and Damon Albarn at The Festival In The Desert and the Tamika Reggae Awards in New York amongst many others.
His second largely self produced album How Do You Call It (released in Europe September 2002) saw Patrice evolving his sound with a rich melange of Hip Hop, Soul and Reggae which underpinned twelve well crafted songs. Recorded over a two-month period in Jamaica and with 3 tracks produced in London with Cameron McVey, Massive Attack, Youssouf N'Dour, Andu Baraganescu and Neneh Cherry, How Do You Call It further cemented his unique niche in todays diverse musical landscape. The LP also spawned the Pan European hit Sunshine.
Nile, Patrice's third and most current album (named after the river Nile, representing Life in the African continent) is truly a bold undertaking and can be described as a work of astounding maturity, sincerity and sensitivity. Whether rocking to the amped guitar, explosive drums and African percussion behind Africanize Dem or soaking up the beautiful rendition of the obscure Wailers track It Hurts To Be Alone it's clear that experimentation has lent his work an undeniable urgency and freshness. The present single Soulstorm has provided Patrice with another European hit. The majority of 2005 was spent performing to sell out audiences throughout Europe which included his first headlined show for all the UK fans at The Borderline, in London, and perhaps the pinnacle of his career so far, playing in front of the 6,000 fans who filled out the Zenith in Paris. In the summer of 2006 Patrice released a live DVD which gives the audience an exclusive look at how Nile was recorded, rehearsed and performed throughout the world.
Thought I Knew
Patrice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I thought I knew what love is
but now I got to redefine it,
now I know what I missed
as I was looking for this.
I thought I knew
what love is,
I got to redefine it,
as I was looking for this, now I know what love is.
I found beauty in the poorest of places,
while in the rich world there was none of it to find.
Born and raised in the desert your voice was my oasis,
you where like waterwhen my cup was running dry.
In my darkest hour you would shine right in my face yes.
When I was down and blue through you my hopes were raised.
Yes In my prayers I givethanks
and I give praises for you, baby you, baby you
CHORUS
I thought I knew what love is
but now I got to redefine it,
now I know what I missed
as I was looking for this.
I thought I knew
what love is,
I got to redefine it,
now I know what I missed
as I was looking for this, now I know what love is.
Life is blazing you're amazing moon bathing
on the pavement in your arms I find my peace of mind.
As paradise was civilized and paralized superflys
with 7 lives were televised as heaven crys these lullabies.
Well it's venus between us seniors team up with deamons.
Them fight the wars we bear the scars,
mess up the earth and leave tomars.
This is higher than any mountain greater
than the universe deeper than eternity
your gravity is grounding me.
And I take you on morning rides,
yes I take you on evening rides,
yes we will ridethe storms and tides,
through the night through the night,
through the night
CHORUS
I thought I knew what love is
but now I got to redefine it,
now I know what I missed
as I was looking for this.
I thought I knew
what love is,
I got to redefine it,
now I know what I missed
as I was looking for this, now I know what love is
In Patrice's song Thought I Knew, he reflects on his past perception of love and how it has changed after experiencing a deeper, more meaningful connection with someone special. The chorus repeats the idea of redefining what love is and realizing what he has missed. The verses describe his journey and the special person who helped him understand what love truly means.
The first verse describes how Patrice found beauty in unexpected places and how the person he loves became his oasis in the desert. She was the one who gave him hope when he was feeling down and blue. He praises and gives thanks for her, recognizing the profound impact she has had on his life.
The second verse continues to praise his partner and describes the deep connection they have. Even in a world that can be overwhelming and disheartening, being with her brings peace of mind. Patrice compares their love to something larger than life, deeper than eternity, and more grounding than gravity. Together they ride the storms and tides of life through the night.
Overall, the song reflects a deep appreciation for love and how it can transform and redefine one's life. It highlights the profound impact that a meaningful connection with someone special can have, and how it can give one a sense of purpose and direction.
