Her music is centered on her singing, in a fairly low register and a traditional bluesy-jazz style, and her piano playing, which is technically accomplished. Her repertoire includes many of her own compositions, but also a selection of standards drawn mostly from the classic-rock genre; examples include "Ode to Billie Joe," "A Taste of Honey," and "Black Magic Woman." She is known for her apparent above-average intelligence and vocabulary, which results in complex and witty lyrics. Her last album to date, Mythologies is a set of songs based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. In September 2008, Patricia is releasing "The Cole Porter Mix," a collection of Patricia's renditions of the Porter songbook along with three Barber originals inspired by Cole Porter.
Patricia Barber is a lesbian. Interviews with her suggests that she does not try to hide this fact, but that she 'tires' of the public interest in her sexuality – disliking the fact that it contributes to her fame.
Her albums Cafe Blue, Modern Cool, Companion, Nightclub, Verse have been reissued by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab on SACD and limited edition 45 rpm 1/2 speed mastered, 180 gram audiophile vinyl.
You Stepped Out Of A Dream
Patricia Barber Lyrics

You are too wonderful to be what you seem!
Could there be eyes like yours,
Could there be lips like yours
Could there be smiles like yours,
Honest and truly?
You stepped out of a cloud
I want to take you away, away from the crowd
Alone and apart out of a dream,
Safe in my heart
You stepped out of a dream
You are too wonderful to be what you seem!
Could there be eyes like yours,
Could there be lips like yours
Could there be smiles like yours,
Honest and truly?
You stepped out of a cloud
I want to take you away, away from the crowd
And have you all to myself,
Alone and apart out of a dream,
Safe in my heart
The opening lines of Patricia Barber's "You Stepped Out of a Dream" describe the feeling of disbelief and surrealness that one feels when they meet someone that seems almost too perfect to be real. The singer is in awe of the person they have just met, and the lyrics describe their eyes, lips, and smiles as something otherworldly. The use of the word "dream" in the title and throughout the song reinforces the idea that this encounter feels almost unreal, like a fantasy come to life.
The second half of the song reveals the singer's desire to be alone with this person, to have them all to themselves and keep them safe in their heart. The lyrics create a romantic, almost dreamlike setting in which the singer and their newfound love can escape from the rest of the world.
Overall, the song captures the feeling of falling head over heels in love with someone you've just met, and the desire to hold onto that feeling forever.
