Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.

L' percepteur qui t' casse ta tirelire, O.K. K.O.
Mal à la tête, j' peux pas dormir, O.K. K.O.
Ça fait désordre, K.O.
Et moi qui chante pour pas donner
Ça donne des ordres
De leçons, là j' crois qu' c'est raté
Ça fait désordre
Mais j' s'rai K.O. si j' dis O.K.
Ça donne des ordres
C'est mon désordre
Ça fait désordre
L'étudiant qui a plus d' facultés
Ça donne des ordres
BC BG mal vacciné
Ça fait désordre
Toute la planète qui veut planer
Ça fait désordre
Ça fait désordre
Ça donne des ordres
Ça fait désordre
Ça donne des ordres
Ça fait désordre
In Patrick Bruel's song "Ca Fait des Ordres," the lyrics are a commentary on modern society and the tendency to follow orders blindly. The first verse talks about how we have become desensitized to bad news, and how we will eventually find it normal. The singer also mentions how they don't go out without a big umbrella because of the constant drizzle of orders that infiltrate our lives. The chorus tells us that if the singer did not realize that there were so many orders around them, they would have joined a convent. This highlights the overwhelming nature of the orders placed on us every day.
The second verse speaks about the singer's contentment with their life, despite all the chaos around them. They mention how they would watch a war movie if the third world war was to break out. The next few lines take a jab at the idea of success as we know it, with the singer emphasizing their satisfaction with a simple existence. The next chorus focuses on the behaviors of people who dictate orders, such as parking wardens or tax collectors. The final verse highlights the singer's realization that even their singing is a form of ordering people, and their conclusion that they would be knocked out if they said ok to all the orders given to them.
Overall, the song is a commentary on the orders we face in our daily lives, from petty traffic fines to societal norms and the pressure to conform. The singer suggests that we should be aware of these orders and the impact they have on our lives, rather than blindly following them.
