Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.
Mon enfance

Dans cette ville loin perdue
Ou j'avais passé mon enfance
J'ai eu tort, j'ai voulu revoir
Où mon passé me crucifie?
Elle dort à jamais, mon enfance
These lyrics depict the singer's return to his childhood town and the mixed emotions and memories that arise from that experience. In the first paragraph, the singer admits that he was wrong to come back to this distant and forgotten city where he spent his childhood. He describes revisiting the hill where dusk used to give way to shades of blue and gray, enveloping the landscape in a silence that echoes the past. Despite the passage of time, he feels like he has returned to a place frozen in his memories, with the hill and tree standing just as they did before.
In the second paragraph, the singer walks with a burning sensation in his temples, hoping to drown out the voices of the past that haunt him and resurface to remind him of his regrets. Seeking solace, he lies down under the tree and finds comfort in its familiarity and the nostalgic scents that waft through the air. He allows himself to cry, releasing pent-up emotions and connecting to the innocence of his childhood. He feels a renewed sense of strength bestowed upon him by the tree, just like in his younger days.
The third paragraph delves into more specific details that the singer longs to revisit from his childhood. He mentions wanting to see the house adorned with roses, the garden where the joyful sounds of children filled the air, and the memories of friends and loved ones. Everything starts to resemble the past, with the heavy scent of red sages, the presence of vibrant dahlias in the pathway, and even the well seems just as he remembers. However, he acknowledges the unfortunate reality that war had thrust them into this place, causing suffering and making their childhoods anything but carefree.
The fourth and final paragraph shifts to a more melancholic tone, as the singer reflects on the painful nature of childhood memories. He realizes that one should never go back to the hidden realms of memories, especially those from childhood, as they have the power to tear you apart. The singer laments the loss of his mother and loved ones, as they are now buried in the warm earth, while he stands alone with his distress. He questions his decision to come back to this place that only crucifies his past and leaves him feeling cold, fearful, and lonely. His childhood, represented by his deceased mother, rests forever in its eternal slumber.

I made a mistake, I wanted to see again

Pourquoi suis-je venu ici
Why did I come here
Où mon passé me crucifie?
Where my past crucifies me?
Elle dort à jamais, mon enfance
My childhood sleeps forever
