Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.
Musique Vieille

Je sais
Chopin d'prisunic
Mozart de bazar
C'est d'la vieille musique
Du blues bizarre
Vieille, parce qu'il y a des soirs
Où l'on s'crève le cœur
De blessures mineures
Où l'on s' fait la peau
On sort son piano
J' veux bien donner
Mais faut qu'on m' donne
Tu prends, tu donnes
Mais y' a maldonne
Tout c' que tu fais
Un jour, s' défait
Et c'est comme ça qu'c'est
Seul, qu'est-ce que j'me sens seul
Tu sais
Rien qu'un métronome
Qui s' croit un cœur d'homme
Rien qu'un mal de mère
Que j' peux pas faire
Seul, parce que c'est comme ça
Tu vois
Orgue de barbarigme
S'quitter, c'est un crime
Le chagrin qu'ça donne
Personne se l'pardonne
J' veux bien aimer
Mais faut qu'on m'aime
J't'adore, je t'aime
Mais j' pars quand même
Tout c'que tu m'dis
J'l'ai déjà dit
Et r'garde où j'en suis
J'aime pas ma vie
Pourtant j'la vis
J'ai peur d'la mort
Pourtant je sors
J'préfère crever
Que d'plus rêver
Même si c'est cauchemar
Marre de tout
Marre de vous
J'vous aime tellement
J'vous hais pourtant
J'préfère crever
Que d' plus rêver
Même si c'est cauchemar
J' veux bien donner
Mais faut qu'on m' donne
Tu prends, tu donnes
Mais y' a maldonne
Tout c' que tu fais
Un jour, s' défait
Et c'est comme ça qu' c'est
J' veux bien aimer
Mais faut qu'on m'aime
J' t'adore, je t'aime
Mais j' pars quand même
Tout c' que tu m' dis
J' l'ai déjà dis
Et r'garde où j'en suis
The song "Musique Vieille" by Patrick Bruel is a melancholic and introspective piece that reflects on the artist's feelings of isolation and disillusionment with life. The opening stanza sets the tone of the song, with the repetition of the phrase "c'est d'la musique vieille" emphasizing the idea of old, outdated music. The lyrics mention the names of classical composers such as Chopin and Mozart but describe them as having been reduced to cheap commodities ("prisunic" and "bazar"). The line "du blues bizarre" suggests a sense of dissonance and discomfort with the world and its attempts to categorize and quantify art.
The second stanza suggests that the singer turns to music as a means of coping with emotional pain. The "blessures mineures" mentioned could be interpreted as small wounds inflicted by disappointments or failures. The act of playing the piano becomes a means of self-expression and a way to deal with these hurts. However, even in this act of creation, there is a sense of unease, as the singer laments the tendency for things to fall apart and for misunderstandings to arise in human relationships ("tu prends, tu donnes mais y'a maldonne").
The final stanza returns to the theme of melancholy and loneliness. The singer feels alone in his struggles and sees himself as a metronome, a mechanical device that marks the passage of time. The line "rien qu'un mal de mère que j' peux pas faire" suggests a sense of helplessness and inadequacy in the face of emotional pain. The song ends with a repetition of the earlier lines about giving and receiving, love and leaving, and the inevitability of life's disappointments.
Overall, "Musique Vieille" is a poignant reflection on the human condition and the search for meaning and connection in a world that often seems indifferent and hostile.

Où l'on s'crève le cœur
Where we break our hearts
De blessures mineures
From minor wounds
Où l'on s' fait la peau
Where we tear ourselves apart
On sort son piano
We bring out our piano
J' veux bien donner
I'm willing to give
Mais faut qu'on m' donne
But someone has to give to me
Tu prends, tu donnes
You take, you give
Mais y' a maldonne
But there's a mix-up
Tout c' que tu fais
Everything you do
Un jour, s' défait
One day, it falls apart
Et c'est comme ça qu'c'est
And that's how it is
Seul, qu'est-ce que j'me sens seul
Alone, how lonely I feel
Tu sais

Thinking it has a human heart
Rien qu'un mal de mère
Just a mother's pain

That I can't fix

To leave is a crime
Le chagrin qu'ça donne
The sorrow it gives
Personne se l'pardonne
No one forgives themselves for it
J' veux bien aimer
I'm willing to love
Mais faut qu'on m'aime
But someone has to love me
J't'adore, je t'aime
I adore you, I love you
Mais j' pars quand même
But I'm leaving anyway
Tout c'que tu m'dis
Everything you tell me
J'l'ai déjà dit
I've already said
Et r'garde où j'en suis
And look where I am
J'aime pas ma vie
I don't like my life
Pourtant j'la vis
Yet I live it
J'ai peur d'la mort
I'm afraid of death
Pourtant je sors
Yet I go out
J'préfère crever
I'd rather die
Que d'plus rêver
Than dream anymore
Même si c'est cauchemar
Even if it's a nightmare
Marre de tout
Fed up with everything
Marre de vous
Fed up with you
J'vous aime tellement
I love you so much
J'vous hais pourtant
Yet I hate you
