Although Bruel aspired to be a football star as a youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner Amanda Maruani gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on August 19. On September 21, 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Maruani; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon Bruel was born on the 28th September, 2005.
As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. His last album to date is Entre Deux (2002), a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of December 26, 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross.
On T'Attendait

Tu baisses les yeux, on dirait qu' ça t' gêne de m' revoir
Qu'est-ce que tu d'viens?
Enfin, d'habitude, c'est c' qu'on dit
Même si on dit
On t'attendait
Simplement
Faut pas laisser
Trop de temps
On t'attendait
Comme avant
Où t'en es
Maintenant?
Où est passé ce type
Qui avait l' monde à refaire?
Qui nous disait
Qu'il fallait tout laisser derrière
Qu'on s' ressemblait
Qu'on avait l' même côté grande gueule
Mais qu' fallait toujours être ensemble
Quand on est seul
Celui qui avait rempli nos vies, gonflé nos voiles
Mais qui a jamais mis son bateau sous les étoiles
On t'écoutait
On avançait
Alors arrête de répéter qu' t'as tout foiré
On est venu
Te chercher
C'est pas par hasard si aujourd'hui on t'a croisé
On t'attendait
Simplement
Faut pas laisser
Trop de temps
On t'attendait
Comme avant
On est là
Maintenant
On t'attendait
Comme avant
Faut pas laisser
Trop de temps
On t'attendait
Simplement
On est là
On t'attend
The lyrics of Patrick Bruel's song "On T'attendait" speak about the unexpected reunion with a friend who seems to be going through a tough time. The opening lines express the awkwardness of meeting them by chance and their reaction of avoiding eye contact, giving the impression that they are uncomfortable seeing each other again. The singer then asks what's been happening in their life and mentions hearing rumors that they hang out with strange people and that they appear unhappy. The chorus repeats the line "On t'attendait" (We were waiting for you), expressing the feeling that they miss their friend and want them back in their lives. They reminisce about the person they used to be and the dreams they once shared.
The bridge of the song talks about how their friend was once full of life, always encouraging them to leave the past behind and look towards the future. They were confident, gregarious, and the life of the party. However, they seem to be lost and have not fulfilled their potential. The singer and their friends call their friend back into their circle, stating that they wanted to see them and that it wasn't by chance that they crossed paths.
The lyrics of the song are a testament to the power of friendship and the need to reach out to those who are struggling. The song encourages us to seek out those we've lost touch with and help them find their way back. The song's message is uplifting and speaks of hope for the future, highlighting the fact that people can always turn their lives around, and that true friends will always be there to support them.
